by Marc Ayotte A playoff atmosphere snuck into the Campbell High School gymnasium, affectionately referred to as the ‘Cougar Den,’ this past Saturday, February 26. On tap was a basketball doubleheader featuring the CHS girls’ and boys’ varsity teams. In the early game of the day, the 13th seed Campbell boys dismantled Newport, 70-31, in a ‘play-in’ game to determine who would move on to the round of 16 teams in the Division III state tournament. The nightcap showcased the Division III top-ranked team in the state, the Lady Cougars, hosting ninth-seed Mascoma Valley Regional, who saw a very supportive and animated following make the hour and 45-minute trip to watch their team. The enthusiastic support, however, was not enough, as the red and white machine rolled over the Royals by a 53-33 score.
In afternoon action, the Cougars got out to a
slow, but steady, 10-4 lead three minutes in. With just under two minutes left in the opening quarter, Newport’s Greg Beaulieu drained a long outside jumper to bring the Tigers to within five at 12-7. That’s as close as it would get, as the home team added a hoop to finish the quarter, leading by a touchdown (and PAT) at 14-7.
One minute into the second stanza, CHS’s Max
Gouveia ended up with a loose rebound in the paint and converted a jumper for an 18-7 lead. In what appeared to be a mixture between a 2-1-2

zone defense, which occasionally morphed into a 2-3 zone, the Campbell defense effectively kept the Newport offense hanging around half- court. As the outside perimeter Tiger offense continued unable to penetrate the Cougar zone, Newport Head Coach Steve Lavolpicelo barked out directions to his five on the floor: “Be patient, fellas.” Unfortunately for the Tigers and their fans, the point-starved visitors were also patient in putting up points onto their side of the scoreboard.

versatility via scoring and passing, Josh Morgan dumped in 18 of his game-high 29 points, as well as contributed a couple of nice jump-pass assists. As the quarter neared completion, the dominant Campbell offense doubled up Newport in the scoring department. A desperation ’tres’ at the buzzer by the visitor’s Devin Wade ended the Tiger scoreless stretch and cut the Cougar lead to 30-18 at the intermission. For the first two-plus minutes of the second half, Newport played Campbell evenly and remained within striking distance. A pretty feed from Cougar tri-captain Tyler Syphers to Kyle Mun for an easy lay-up and a 36-22 CHS lead forced a Newport timeout with 5:34 left in the third quarter. With the 20 seed already in trouble far away from home, the situation continued to darken when this time, Morgan, with another sparkling jump pass, hit Mun for another uncontested hoop. A penetrating drive and lay- up by freshman Jesiah Wade pushed the Cougar lead to the biggest of the day at 42-22 and pretty much put an end to Newport’s post-season. With wholesale personnel
changes the trademark for the final quarter, all Cougar players saw some action. As a result, eight Cougars got into the scoring column. “It was nice to get everybody in [the game],” noted Head Coach Patrick Roye. Admitting his team did get off to a slow start in the game, Coach Roye did also point out that he addressed that issue at halftime and apparently his mild-mannered message was communicated effectively, as Campbell came out of the locker room to outscore their opponent 40-13 in the final 16 minutes of play.
In addition to Morgan’s 29 points, Jesiah Wade contributed nicely with 11 points, which included the sweetest hoop of the day coming in the game’s waning moments, as he converted a Max Gouveia cross- court pass with a mid-air catch and shoot. Also playing a nice game was Mun, who chipped in with 10 points. In echoing Coach Roye’s game analysis, tri-captain Morgan noted, “we played okay in the first half— the first half, we were flat. The second half, we were more focused—ready to play.” The Cougars are next in action

when they travel to play White Mountains Regional in a 13 vs. 6 match-up. With a record of 15-2 on the season, the Spartans will certainly be a formidable opponent. “They are very big. We will need to do a good job on the glass to stay with them,” commented Coach Roye on his next game. But in an attempt to still savor his victory over Newport, he added, “I’m very happy with how far they [his team] have come.”
In the second game of the Cougar doubleheader, the number-one seeded Lady Cougars handled some early resistance from Mascoma.

Coming out of a timeout with 1:37 left to play in the opening quarter, Mascoma scored the quarter’s final five points, cutting the Cougar lead to 18-9 and avoided being run out of ’The Den,’ at least for the time being. The second quarter showed exactly why the Shaw Flynn-headed Cougars are a strong candidate to raise a championship banner in the spring. The whole Cougar package was evident during the second eight minutes of action, as rebounding, interior passing, and intense defense, not to mention an offensive explosion, were on display. Senior Kristen Hrubowchak (20 first-half points) and junior Rebecca Arnone (15 first-half points) led the second quarter blitzkrieg, which saw Campbell go on an amazing 21-2 run to finish the half ahead by 25 points at 39-14. The second-half entertainment didn’t come from
an amazing Mascoma comeback, nor did it come from Arnone or Hrubowchak pushing their point totals to the half-century mark.
Instead, it came
from the 20 or so Mascoma fans who traveled to Campbell gym to support their team. Now granted, the Mascoma girls’ team record of 11-6 is very good, but when compared to the Royals boys’ undefeated record and number-one ranking, one could see the potential for discouragement catching up with the Mascoma fans. To the contrary. Campbell went into a spread offense in an attempt to draw out man-to-man coverage on the part of Mascoma to start the second half. Instead of drawing out the man-to-man defense, the CHS offensive shutdown drew out some humorous
chants from the visiting student fans. With almost two minutes of possession time without a shot attempt, the gym began to echo with clever Mascoma chants like: “Do something,” “Boring,” “It’s so quiet in here,” “We’re waiting,” and “Dunk it!” to name a few. In a very respectful and fun way, the Royal fans supported their team to the very end of the 53-33 beat-down when the final chant was shouted out: “We still love you, clap, clap, clap-clap-clap!” Post-game, a hoarse Coach Flynn noted,
“Tonight, we really showed our captain-ship. Those two [Hrubowchak and Arnone] led us to our fourth final four in four years.” In a semifinal match-up at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), the Lady Cougars will also have faced the Spartans of White Mountains Regional. The game was slated to be the second of two semifinal contests, with the tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2. If the Lady Cougars are victorious in that game, they will meet the winner of the other semifinal game for the Division III state championship on Saturday, March 5, at 6 p.m., again to be held on the campus of SNHU. In looking forward to their semifinal opponent
who they have not played against this season, Assistant Coach Rod Hayward commented on the team’s defensive flexibility: “I think we’ll do a good job defensively [if they] are big or guard- oriented.” In addition to commenting on his team’s season-long tremendous interior passing, Coach Flynn specifically highlighted the gem of a three-quarter-court pass from Pettis to Arnone for a lay-up in the home finale. “Team passing shows our great team chemistry,” added the head Cougar.
