Broncos Trample Titans on Senior Night

by Sue LaRoche March came in like a lion on the Steckevicz Gymnasium floor on Tuesday, March 1, as the Broncos soundly defeated the Titans of Nashua North on Senior Night by the score of 79-51. With the six seniors showing unity by wearing white headbands for the game, one senior in particular, Caleb Donnelly, hit for 31 points in the game, including five three-point shots, to put the game out of reach.

Prior to the game, these six young men were recognized at their final home game of their high school careers: Caleb Donnelly, Patrick Nager, Matthew Flynn, Conor Hein, Tyler MacDonald, and Jonathan Baldwin. It was a very tight first quarter of play, with Donnelly and Tony Beaulieu doing all of the scoring for Alvirne, who found themselves trailing by two points at the end of the first. The Broncos went on a 27-15 run in the second quarter to

open up a 42-32 lead at the half. Donnelly and Tyler Livingston had the hot hands in the quarter, scoring 11 and nine points, respectively. Alvirne widened their lead to 11 in the third quarter and iced the victory by outscoring North 19-5 in the final quarter. Donnelly had a monster game with 31 points, three rebounds, two steals, and one assist. Livingston added 16 points, eight rebounds, and two steals, followed by Beaulieu with 13 points, three rebounds, and one blocked

shot, who toughed it out after spraining an ankle. The Broncos, now 7-9 on the season, have two games remaining, both on the road, against Dover and Winnacunnet. They await their opponent in the NHIAA Division I playoffs, which will probably have them playing next Tuesday, March 8, at 7 p.m. on the road for the first round of the playoffs. With the Broncos playing good defense and the offense clicking, they will prove to be a tough, first-round opponent.

season, was played on Saturday instead of Friday due to a weather-related cancellation. The five graduating seniors who were recognized prior to the game are: Deanna Trearchis, Cathryn Fernandes, Emily Gosselin, Deanna “DJ” Purcell, and Kathryn Donovan. The Dover Green Wave and the Lady Broncos exchanged baskets early in the contest and Alvirne found themselves down 13-10 at the end of the first quarter. Katie Donovan grabbed an offensive rebound and hit for a three-

point play, which put the Broncos up 24-21 with 2:47 to go until the half. Alvirne maintained the lead, 28-25, at halftime. After trading baskets at the beginning of the third quarter, freshman Veronica Moceri ran off five unanswered points to give the Broncos a 43-35 lead and a huge swing in momentum. The Broncos held Dover scoreless until 1:16 in the final quarter, steadily building their lead to 52-36, which Dover could not overcome in the waning minutes of the game. Seniors Donovan and Purcell led the way with 17 points each (Donovan added eight rebounds

and two blocked shots, while Purcell added seven rebounds, one assist, five steals, and one blocked shot). Taylor Carbone added six points, six rebounds, and one assist, while Moceri added five points and one rebound. With this victory, the Lady Broncos have sewn up sixth place in NHIAA Division 1 girls’ basketball and will have hosted Nashua South on Wednesday, March 2. With a victory, they will move to the quarterfinal round at the home of the higher seed on Saturday, March 5, at 7 p.m.
