individually-made items of jewellery and one stallholder, who is a book conservator, stocks beautiful books, notebooks and diaries.

As well as gift ideas, there are stalls selling and celebrating delicious local food. Suffolk is filled with passionate local producers, so it’s great to have such mouth-watering examples as sloe gin, handmade fudge, fruit juices and Christmas hampers.

The market also stocks Christmas trees, wreaths, and seasonal cards; in fact, everything one needs for a memorable Christmas: it’s an enticing mix. The market has a keen sense of occasion, with all the stalls covered with traditional striped tops, colourful bunting decorating the trees and the odd busker entertaining the visitors. Last year, the Suffolk Singers brought a layer of festive joy to the proceedings and this year, there will be a choir from a local school who will be singing traditional Christmas carols to get visitors into the festive spirit.

What makes this market different from other markets is that the Deben group make sure to attract the right mix of stallholders, selling really unusual items that make great and unique Christmas presents. They like to think that the market offers shopping for the independently- minded, a million miles away from mass-produced things found on the high street. They look at every potential seller’s website to make sure that they have good quality items that are interesting and / or different.

There are also traditional market stalls, thereby ensuring an authentic market experience. The stallholders take pride in displaying their wares to their best advantage, making it a joy to wander around and see the huge talent of the sellers who have come for the day.

Not content with advertising through more traditional means, the group wanted to try to capture some of the spirit of the market by making

a short film, ‘Market Movie’ [www. youtube.com/user/wvcm1#p/a]. Set against a funky/retro soundtrack – all in keeping with the feel and atmosphere they like to create at the markets - they rove around with a camcorder, capturing some of the people and stalls there on the day.
