What are your goals for the next 5 years? To expand! I’m finally getting a bigger studio. I also have some freelance help now too; I would love to have them on a more permanent basis that would be great. I want to continue expanding my label and to keep collaborating with great companies and licensing and expanding the Rachael Taylor brand further.

Sometimes, I just phone a friend or my mum for a quick 5 minute catch up to distract me, which usually works.

When did you decide to start your own business? I always knew I wanted to run my own business one day. In January 2008, I decided that I would set up in September 2008 as I felt too restricted in my job and something just didn’t feel quite right. I actually left in April in the end, as it felt right and I decided to go for it and take the risk. I’ve never looked back and the past two and a half years have been the best and most exciting.

Was it easy? What have been the biggest challenges? It wasn’t easy, it really has been a lot of hard work and my family and friends say I work too much, but I have loved every minute of it. It really is like a roller coaster, every day is different, exciting and I just love the unknown.

Some days my workload is crazy, but I’m so grateful to be this busy. It really is scary launching a label and yourself as a new freelancer as you just don’t know how you will be received. I’m so lucky to have received such a lovely response and support.

What advice would you give someone else starting their own creative business? To take each day at a time so you’re not overwhelmed by your future goals. I think it’s really important for designers to network and to have an accessible portfolio/website. Most of all enjoy it as I think it shows in your work!
