Swim Coach Spencer Crum instructs the swimmers on the Power squad, a group of athletes looking to cross-train, rehabilitate, or simply enjoy the sport. The group remains flexible to each swimmer’s needs; when an athlete has other commitments, he or she can be taken off the group roster until it is possible to return to the pool.

“Any time you start up a new team the expectations typically need adjusting,” says Coach Spencer Crum about Power. “I started with several athletes who were burned out, so I took it upon myself to try to get them to fall back in love with swim- ming. That’s a tough task to take on.” The group has morphed several times during the past two years and now has clear expectations. Crum believes that structuring the group helps give direction to the athletes. “The athletes come in and they know what to expect,” he says. “They know that they’ll be swimming for an hour and that their attention and focus on what they are doing is of the utmost impor- tance.”
Practice is offered five times a week and is flexible to the athletes’ schedule. Athletes who are between 12 and 18 have a chance to have fun and be competitive, all while staying connected with their peers and other activities.
Power typically averages 10 to 15 athletes in any given month. When athletes have other sports or activities going on they simply have to let their coach know, and they’re taken off the group roster until they decide to rejoin the group. Power offers athletes who love the water an opportunity to learn to swim fast through improving their technique, and utilizing strength and speed. This group also provides all the competitive elements of their peers, although their primary training ingredients consist of speed, power and explosiveness to create faster swimmers.
Any athlete who is looking for a chance to be successful in the aquatic environ- ment, while not sacrificing other activities, should consider joining the Power squad. For more information, call 503-517-7504. WM
