The Brain on Memory and Aging


March 24 at 6 p.m. to present his lecture, This is Your Brain on Memory & Aging. There is no doubt that brain health continues to be a hot fitness topic, espe- cially among older adults and their families. Anunsen explores this topic and how the brain interacts with memory and aging. Attendees can expect an evening that includes many recent brain science research findings, as well as a range of clear, practical and easy-to-apply brain health strategies. During the event, participants: • Learn what it means to be living in what is called the golden age of brain science; • Understand the evidence supporting

the discovery of a surprising upside of aging: the benefits of having an older brain, also known as a “mature mind;” • Examine the six cog wheels of brain health; and • Explore science-based approaches that could lead to a custom-tailored brain health plan.

Prepare for March 10 Indoor Sprint Triathlon


T


he Triathlon and Running Committee has the perfect solution for anyone who has ever wanted to do a triathlon but was nervous about swimming in a lake or biking on the road. The annual MAC Indoor Sprint Triathlon is Thursday, March 10 from 4-7:30 p.m.


The swim is 200 yards long and takes place in the 50-meter Pool. The 10-mile biking portion is conducted on spin bikes located on the apron of the Indoor Track. The concluding two-mile run is contested on the Indoor Track.


The competition is open to all MAC members and is geared toward first-time or novice participants. Individuals and relays are encouraged to give it a try. There are prizes for all who compete. Age groups are recognized as under 16, 16-19 years, 20-29 years, 30-39 years, 40-49 years, and 50-plus years. Look for sign-up sheets posted on the triathlon/running bulletin board. Committee introduces new member coach


The Triathlon and Running Committee has selected a new member coach to bring more running programs and events to MAC members. Mary Kapsa comes to the coaching staff with 25 years of running

experience. Her broad running back- ground includes short distance in track and field to longer road races, including mara- thons and Ironman triathlons. Currently, in additional to her daily runs, she enjoys participating in both local running races and triathlons.


Kapsa loves to motivate and encourage people of all abilities to join running groups and help them reach their personal goals. No goal is too small or big, whether it’s running a mile without walking, or running a marathon.


Upcoming events


The first running event of the season is the Shamrock Run Sunday, March 13. This is one of the biggest Portland road races, and there is a distance for everyone: a kids’ run, 5k run, 8k run and 15k run. The Race for the Roses is Sunday,


April 3. Don’t miss the committee’s weekly group runs: • Mondays at 5:45 p.m. in the MAC
