2010 COMMITTEE REPOR TS
he MAC age group swim team continues to grow and now totals 150 swimmers, the largest team in 15 years. The program has achieved this growth thanks to Head Coach Alex Nikitin and Coaches Gary Leach, Spencer Crum and Cyndy VonWeller, who are

doing a remarkable job of teaching the age group level swimmers.
The swim team set a goal of 750 best times for the 2010 season and exceeded its original goal by more than 300, finishing with 1,054 best times. Six MAC swimmers competed at the national level: Max Bley-Male, Carson Brindle, Eetu Karvonen, Luke Marshall, Will Tyrell and Ben Weston. Brindle finished the season ranked No. 1 in the United States in his age group for the 50 free and officially became the fastest MAC swimmer in history. Bley-Male, Brindle, Tristan Furnary
and Marshall achieved times in the national top 16 in individual events. Furnary, Bailey Pearson, Andrew Wright and Bley-Male won individual state and sectional cham-
Numerous MAC swimmers placed in the top eight at the state and age group sectional championships. Fourteen MAC swimmers made the list of Oregon Swimming top five awards. Numerous MAC team records were set, and a score of swimmers currently hold MAC team all-time top-five best performances. Emily Lightcap made the USA Scholastic all- American team.
Coach Nikitin was selected as an assis-
tant men’s coach to the USA Swimming National Select Camp held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Coach Crum was selected to be a coach of the Oregon all star and zone teams. The MAC masters swim team continues to thrive. Masters swimmers have set numerous club and state records; many MAC swimmers have also participated in relay teams that have set national and world records.
A group of elite swimmers from the masters team dominated at the state cham- pionships in both individual and relay events, and MAC members were honored at the annual Oregon Masters Swimming awards banquet. This was the largest group of MAC swimmers at the state meet in a

successful 2010 season, both in the pool and as Multnomah Athletic Club members.
The junior program had an outstanding season, from the U.S. age group championships in Tonawanda, N.Y., to
few years, and the strongest performance in recent years.
Eight MAC masters swimmers were honored at the Oregon Masters Swimming awards banquet in April. This annual awards ceremony celebrates the accom- plishments of masters swimmers from Oregon for the prior year. Kelsey Bowen, Doug Otto, Brent Washburne, Lauren Thies, Betsy Austen, Eric Wan, Reggie Sherwood and Mike Dowd were all recog- nized for their achievements. Fitness swimming continues year-round, as the MAC masters added a fourth member coach to offer even more supervised workouts and to help at swimming events. Triathletes have been taking advantage of the distance training, and beginners have been joining in practices to work on their technique. Even athletes who are recovering from sports injuries are enjoying the thera- peutic effects of swimming. Thanks to the members of the committee: Marc Bowen, Julie Carpenter, Troy Drawz, Caroline Marnoch, Steve Pearson, Mike Peyton, Laura Tyrell, Charlie Van Rossen and Ron Williams for their dedicated service. Additional thanks to Coach Nikitin, Aquatics Manager Reid Macdonald, and Athletic Committee liaison Jerry Powell. WM

a Cinderella-win at the U.S. Open. U.S. age group highlights included eight top-10 finalists throughout four age groups, with a record-high third place in the 16-17 team event. We also had junior representation at the U.S. open championship in July, which resulted in a historic win for the trio of Sarah House, Kathleen Lance and Katy Wiita, who earned the committee’s nomi- nation for the Mel Fox Award.
The MAC junior program is producing even more national team qualifiers. Renee
Zhang missed being named to the 2010 11-12 national team by only one spot. Wiita was only four spots below making the 2010 junior national team. Both earned spots in the 2011 national team trials for their respective levels. Our head coach, Julie Thaden, served as the head coach of the 2010 11-12 national team, which trained at the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center and earned three golds at the Pan American age group games in Lima, Peru.
The masters also had an outstanding season. They traveled to the U.S. masters championship in October, where they claimed seven national titles and several other high placements, including yet another historic win for the MAC synchro program: the first-ever 80-89 team gold medal. Thaden and assistant coaches Lucie Svrcinova and M’Liss Stephenson each produced many finalists and champions this year assisted by part-time assistant coach Marissa Montejano and member coaches Mike Cook, Erin King, Kerri Palm
and Liz Palmer. With the departure of Stephenson in August, the program began a search for a new full-time assistant coach; Meryl Grandia was hired in January. The committee has worked hard to meet various club deadlines for funding and fund- raiser requests, as well as athletic member proposals, instituting masters program minutes, revised sport-specific standards, character-driven and professional responses to the athletic fee increase, and continued willingness to go above and beyond to support the MAC synchronized swimming program in finding a second assistant coach. Along with a strong booster group, which oversees several fundraisers, the committee supports annual exhibitions for both the juniors and masters, showcasing the talents of this program with participant ages ranging from 6 to 87. Committee members were Rosa Comas, Jeanine Cavagnaro, Julia Hall, Anne Hecht, Julie Lance, Sarah Beth Pfohman, Dani Rosendahl, Martha Shepherd, Jeanne Steed and Tom Wiita. WM
