many men, so little time – sigh. Another great option for spring breaking by the way – all-inclusive cruises, one price and everything but your liquor is included – what could be better (watch it though, the liquor bill can be just like an iceberg, ripping a hole in your wallet, just like the Titanic if you’re not careful!). For something totally different, how about a spring
break in Guatemala? I found this great little tour com- pany that sets up tours for gay men (although not lim- ited to) called James Guides. Each year they put together spring break packages and men from all over the world sign up for the trips (there is limited space, so book early!) and this year’s happens to be in Guatemala. The week-long itinerary starts and ends in Antigua, which is the Spanish Colonial capitol of Guatemala. This journey is partially a guided tour, with plenty of well- planned adventures and liberal choices for unscheduled breaks, leaving ample time to explore on your own. They start you out with a walking tour of the city, but that is just a drop in the proverbial bucket! There are coffee planta- tions to tour, markets, museums, and great restaurants to explore. Yes, there is nightlife too (pay attention to your guide’s recommendations though!). Not satisfied yet? How about a day on the black sand beaches of rustic Monterrico lounging in a hammock? Maybe climbing the ancient Mayan pyramids of Tikal? Perhaps overnight at the summit of the active Volcan Acatenango, staring at the belching crater of Volcan Fuego? If you can’t get excited about this one boys, you are dead to me. It may be a little more rustic, but we have all
done the “traditional” vacations already – it’s time for a little adventure . . . only $995.00 (seriously). Airfare, visa fees, country entry and exit fees, travel insurance, medi- cal coverage, not included!
jamesguides.com Now we go to the opposite end of the spectrum for
spring break getaways: Skiing. I spoke of skiing a couple months ago but there is so much happening for that I thought it worth mentioning again. Many of the major resorts are now having Gay Ski Weeks, or events that cater to us. Here’s what I found out close by: We have two easily accessed here in California: Mam-
moth Mountain and Lake Tahoe. I have been to Lake Tahoe during their event and it was a ton of fun. I ski there pretty regularly and it is such a different experi- ence when there are thousands of us in the same place at the same time. Conversations on the chairs are entirely different, and the sense of community is enormously gratifying. The Lake Tahoe Winterfest Gay and Lesbian Ski Week is
held from March 6 - 11, 2011. Although it is not as large as Mammoth’s, there are several events, a welcome party, dinner, cabaret shows, Après’ Ski Parties, and scenic cruises onboard the MS Queen or the MS Dixie around the emerald waters of Lake Tahoe. laketahoewinter-
fest.com/2011 Elevation is the name given to Mammoth Ski Week
for 2011, it is the most established and continuously expanding event in California. The event is in its ninth year so they have the celebration down pretty well. Mammoth is such a perfect location for the California
gay skier, centrally located, four and a half hours from L.A. or Vegas, six hours from San Francisco, and six and a half hours from San Diego (it usually takes me only five, weather be damned); it is all that you could want in a spring break. Every day you ski, and every night there’s a dinner locale, and a rip-roaring party! The “best of the event” is the Friday night party at 10,000 feet; a freaky, nighttime gondola ride up the mountain, it’s just us gays at the peak, dude that’s sick! Just be careful, cocktails at 10,000 feet are nothing like cocktails down below – two for one is the rule: every cocktail you drink on high will get you twice as high!
mammothgayski.com Finally, for a quickie, there is always the White Party
in Palm Springs; two hours over the mountains and you have an endless supply of sun, fun and socializing. The dates are April 8 – 11 and the line up of performers and DJs are world-class. If you don’t want to spend the money for the whole weekend, hit the Tea Dance on Sunday, it’s outside in the park right near downtown – easy-peasy!
jeffreysanker.com/home O.K. that’s it – if you can’t make this work for your
“pause de printemps” you’re on your own . . . maybe I’ll see you out there, dancing, swinging, swishing, pad- dling, swooshing, or wining and dining! Ciao!
