INDULGENCES passport by joel martens

After an intense fall and winter, what do we all want (even if

you’re not a student) a much-needed break . . . Friggin’ Calgon take me away! What better way to escape than to plan your own spring break? Although it may not be considered age- appropriate to some for beyond twenty-somethings, who really cares? The glorious thing about being outside what some consider the norm, is that we get to make up our own rules. It’s one of my favorite things about being a homo, the ability to travel when I want, with whom I want, and party as long or as little as I want to. Like the song says “What’s wrong with wanting more, if you can fly then soar. Why settle for just a piece of sky!” – it worked for Yentle didn’t it? To that end I have some recom- mendations for ways to get your “spring break” on.

I think the quintessential place to

start is Florida, and at the top is the South Beach/Miami area (Sobe): It’s high on the list because the gay community is so well established, and to me it’s the most fun, has the most recreation and the most diver- sity in one locale; it has everything that you could ever want. Miles of glorious sandy beaches (the gay beach is located at 12th Street and Ocean Drive), beautiful bodies drenched by the endless sun (I’m swooning just a little) and inviting ocean waters. The accom- modations are varied; from the classic Bahamian style of Hobart’s classic guesthouses keywest-allmale.com to the Deco lines of the beachfront Doubletree Hilton Surfcomber Hotel doubletree1. hilton.com, the hotel that plays host to the Winter Party every year. If your pleasure runs more towards the party scene, there’s a plethora of options for you. Sobe offers a dozen or more bars and clubs including the mainstays; Twist, Score, Palace and Mova that are located on the beach and the assortment of clubs in downtown Miami are too numerous to mention. The aforementioned Winter Party winterparty.com is a spring break institution (March 2-7), a world-class destination event that is bound to blow your mind. Five days of revalry, DJs from around the world, and performers like Wanda Sykes (one of my favorites, absolutely hilarious – YouTube her “Detachable Vagina” monologue, it’ll make you laugh ‘till you cry) will be there to bust your gut (not that anyone there has a gut, they wouldn’t dare!). If shopping is your idea of a break, Miami offers it all; high-end

retail to souvenir shops abound. The Miami Beach Art Deco district is not to be passed up. It’s a miracle that so much was saved! Lincoln Road is the mainstay for gays and lesbians as they eat, drink, shop, and enjoy the laissez-faire attitude of South Beach. More shopping and dining can be found on Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue. Here’s a good general website: miamigaytravel.com By the way, there is an unexpected pleasure to the Sobe scene;

the constant embarking and dis-embarking of the all-gay cruises. An international bouquet of men and women flood the city, so
