New York-based photographer Tim Hailand is offering fans of

celebrities, such as Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, out-and-proud musician Rufus Wainwright and Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears, an intimate peek into their personal lives with his One Day in the Life of book series. He recently provided a one-two knock out with his simultaneous

release of the two latter stars’ One Day experiences this past February. Each fascinating book contains candid shots of the subjects, along with their own written thoughts about the experience of being documented during the day-long photoshoot, while also providing insights into their private feelings of being a public figure and lifting the viel on their personality quirks. Hailand’s flashes of brilliance, in book form, compliment his

already sterling reputation as a shutterbug of staggering mag- nitude. He has literally set his sights on shoots for magazines including Entertainment Weekly, The New Yorker, Playgirl and W, to name but a few. His work is also part of the permanent collection of the Guggen-

heim Museum, is archived at MoMa and the Albright-Knox Museum in Buffalo, New York, while he has also exhibited his captured-by-the- lens-visions internationally. Hailand also has the distinction of having accrued quite the celeb-

rity fan base, with stars such as Sir Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Chaka Khan, Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick adding his work to their private collections. Sir Elton John wrote the introduction for his One Day in the Life of

Hai- land’s books are not only informative about their subject matters, proceeds from the sales go to good causes; such as the Elton John AIDS Foundation for Shears’ edition and the Kate McGarrigle Fund for cancer research. We spoke with the talented Mr. Hailand about his impressive port- folio and what he hopes to achieve with his inventive book series.

When did you become interested in photography and decide to pursue it as a full-time career? I have always made art since I was a child: paintings, drawings and performance. I began to focus solely on photographic output around 1996. A camera facilitates my vision best, I am able to observe and record reality. That is,

what I perceive to be interesting and real in the world, and also to frame it, to compose it using my aesthetic, representing it to others as a photographic image. Photos are a great and funny thing; they are a depiction of the world, yet also a com-

plete fantasy at the same time. My background was in painting, and I feel that I have a painterly approach in how I

compose images in my camera. I love music, performers, athletes, and the camera al- lows me to interact with and document these people. And then the world gets a photo out of it, which sometimes becomes an historical document. I love history, the idea of history and also love photo books. So now making my own photo books is the next logical step in my work.

How did you come up with the wonderful idea for your book series? I shot a version of Jake Shears for a magazine, V Man, about five years ago. I liked the concept, and decided to expand upon it.
