A-LISTS community by john bilow At first glance, when you see her over-
the-top clothes and makeup you might be tempted to dismiss Wendy Ho as just another drag queen on stage – you would be wrong on so many levels. For starters, Wendy Ho is a verified female, so there is no tucking required when she prepares to go on stage. She also sings her own songs, there is no lip-synching here. Most
importantly, she’s really funny. Correction on that, she’s not just funny, she’s hilarious! She’s also so raunchy she can make almost anyone
wince at some point during her act. In fact, she has gotten in to some hot water in the past for some of her performances. “One time I performed ‘Poop Noodle’ at a Pride in a certain city and I had to write an apology letter. I guess they weren’t ready for ‘I Sh*t onYour D*ck!’” She admits that she has occasionally been mistaken
for a drag queen, and at first she wasn’t sure how to take it; now she owns it. “A good friend of mine said that’s what I was and I was like – ‘f*ck you,’ and he was like ‘no, it’s because you’re so over the top and it’s about over the top femininity.’ When he put it that way I was like ‘oh that’s very true.’ Soon afterward I heard Bette Midler say that about herself, and when I heard, I texted my friend and told him that it was okay. I’m happy to be known as a female drag queen,” she said. “‘F*ck Me’ is kind of a drag staple, performed by drag queens across the country.” Ho credits her white trash background for some of her
inspiration. She was raised in a Kansas City trailer park by her high school sweetheart parents surrounded by white trash. A born misfit, she was kicked out of her high school choir for sounding “too black.” Later, she escaped to New York but eventually ended up hustling, dealing, and drugging to make ends meet. It was those hard times that eventually inspired some of her funniest material and in 2007 her combination of comedy and musical talent led to her first album, The Gospel According to Ho featuring tracks such as “F*ck Me” and “Cocaine,” which dealt with her drug addiction, as well as “The AIDS Gamble.” The following year, the video for her song “B*tch, I Stole Yo Purse!” was rated as the funniest video of 2008 on the MTV/LOGO network, and it was even spoofed on the television show Nip/Tuck.

After the success of her first album, she followed it with a free download mix tape album entitled Number Two that included the anthem “Poop Noodle.” That was in turn followed by her latest full length album Yes, I’m a Ho featuring the songs, “I Can’t Afford It, (I’m Gonna Have to Abort It)” and “Gurl, Putcho Tampon In.” While her songs are entertaining, clever and well sung,
Wendy Ho is definitely a performer for the MTV gen- eration. As good as her songs are, her videos are even better. They’re like icing on the cake, complimenting her hilarious lyrics with equally funny imagery, and the viral nature of her videos has helped her career take off. She is currently working on producing the video Yes, I’m a Ho. At first glance, one might be tempted to dismiss her as nothing more than simple shock entertainment. Except for two things, she’s actually hilarious and can really sing! Her witty humor and amazing vocal talents perfectly offset her raunchy material. Since hitting the scene in a big way, Ho has performed
across the world from San Diego to Philadelphia, from Greece to Egypt. She’s performed on gay cruises, at dance clubs, and appeared on the Showtime series I Can’t Believe I’m Still Single. She will be performing on the main stage at the Hill-
crest Mardi Gras celebration on March 8 and is looking forward to coming back to San Diego. “I’ve been to San Diego a couple times and performed at Mo’s with the Dreamgirls.” Fans can expect to hear some of her biggest hits and some choice b-sides if time allows. “It’s really hard to gauge what the crowd is going to be into,” she said. “I’ll always do my hits.... I’ll find a way to work in things like ‘Poop Noodle’, ‘Oprah Winfrey’, and ‘F*ck Me.’”
