LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL

March Madness, it really is just that! So much to do and so many things to pay attention to . . . Inside you’ll find many things to put on your social calendar (see pages 66–67), in your travel journal (pages 59-59), on your stovetop (page 71), in your closet (pages 42-47), on your face (page 62) and under your thinking cap (pages 32 and 33). While our aim is always to entertain, to find the best and most interesting interviews, stories and events, we here at The Rage Monthly look for things that also make you think. Our 2011 GLAAD Media Awards preview gives you a heads up on what to expect from the premier event,

22 years running and going strong, as it recognizes and honors those in the media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect our lives. Leaders who not only guide by putting their money where their mouths are, but by standing up for and along side us as we strive for equality. Congratulations to Kristin Chenoweth for her Vanguard Award for her support to the LGBT community. Her

response to the Newsweek assertion that “gay men cannot play straight roles” was swift and heartening, and the many causes and events she has been involved with make her the “Best Witch” in my book. Another award and subsequent congratulatory message goes out to Ricky Martin for the Vito Russo

Award from GLAAD as well. His courage and candor in interviews and in his book has helped open doors and promote discussion about coming out, relationships, and having children; not to mention the importance of supporting them and all LGBT youth. His reach is broad and not necessarily limited to LGBT issues, but that is part of what makes him so deserving. My latest, favorite “Good Witch” is the indomitable Lady GaGa who single-handedly took on the massive

Target Corp. by insisting they alter their policies regarding LGBT issues or her partnership with them would not manifest. Gaga said: “Part of my deal with Target is that they have to start affiliating themselves with LGBT char- ity groups and begin to reform and make amends for the mistakes they’ve made in the past...our relationship is hinged upon their reform in the company to support the gay community and to redeem the mistakes they’ve made supporting those groups.” (Billboard). It goes to show you that progress is always being made. Even though setbacks occur, and tend to be the thing we hear about the most, we are winning this fight. I remember what it was like to grow up in isolation in a tiny town in Northern Wisconsin; and I mean tiny, population: 250. There wasn’t anywhere to turn for guidance or support, taunting, bullying and ridicule were the norm. I survived and it did get better and I thank the stars the world is different now. It is not perfect, especially when you are young and alone, but there are positive role models and images to be had. I am grateful for the warriors that were ahead of us clearing the path, and am exited to know the ones coming forward as they create a new world. You know what they say; “you can never go back”, to that I say; “who would want to”? There are many challenges, but we are experts at overcoming obstacles, and we have a voice that is loud, strong and clear –
