when he retires in May. His theme ‘looking back to the future’ reflected on the major changes he has witnessed and included his vision for the future. Doug took the audience through the highlights of his career including the 1984 Garden Festival initiative by Sir Michael Heseltine with which Wyevale were heavily involved with. He explained that he believes horticulture needs a character of Michael’s stature and drive to re-invigorate the market in the minds of the general public. He also reminded us of how much communication has changed in these past 20 years or so: from the apprehension of the fax machine to the unlimited potential of social networking, this talk provoked a sense of how horticulture must move with the times or fall behind. “Exercise your brain, learn from others and have fun!” Doug concluded. We wish him all the best in his retirement.
Bulk order for new labels
Floramedia UK has taken the first bulk order for its FM100 recycled plastic labels. The Bransford Webbs Plant Company has converted its entire label order for 2011 over to the new FM100 material with an annual order totalling approximately 890,000 labels across a range of 400 varieties of plant. Delivery took place at the beginning of January. “FM100 is the new cost effective green labelling solution from Floramedia. It is 100 per cent recycled and available in both 0.4 and 0.5 polypropylene, offering the same quality and characteristics of virgin material, delivering the same high standards of print Floramedia customers are used
to,” said Floramedia’s Rachel Churchward. For more information call 07764 456221 or email

retail venture Barcham Trees, specialist supplier of mature trees for large developments, is to make its products available to retail buyers for the first time. The Royal Warrant holders for supply to Her Majesty the Queen has built up a reputation for carefully nurturing trees from tiny saplings, to large feature specimens. Having been long endeared to builders, architects, councils and others in the professional sector, Barcham has created a retail arm to its business to offer homeowners the same quality, and is launching a new area of its website for amateur gardeners who don’t want to wait 10-15 years for trees to reach the desired height and size. Mike Glover, Barcham’s managing director said, “Growing trees to a substantial size able to offer immediate impact, as we do, can only be done by a company which specialises in large tree production. Our trees have all been allowed to mature in our patented Light Pot containers, keeping the roots healthy for planting when delivered to customers.” For more information call 01353 720748 or email
