he HTA ‘Contact 2011’ conference quickly dusted down the winter cobwebs and left everyone privileged to be there in a vibrant mood! From the outset the challenge for the retail plant sector was made
clear; we have to adapt to the rapidly changing face of communication whilst addressing the demands of this market. As our Guerrilla Gardener explains in this issue, the GYO and ‘edible gardening’ sectors are here to stay and will increase in value in the coming years. Faced with rising costs and job uncertainty, gardeners and even those not yet interested in gardening may be forced to explore this route in order to survive. It was outlined by many speakers at the conference how much of an impact social networking is having on consumers and on life in general. Whilst a landscape architect or garden designer may not buy or specify plant material from browsing YouTube or Facebook, there is no question that the instant information highway is gathering pace. For example, online news magazines provide us with daily updates from news across the globe as well as our core business interests. The horticulture sector cannot afford to let the world of communication pass it by. I am sure the HTA will address this in the coming months (ahead of the second National Plant Show) and provide information for growers concerning these new media options. This supplement includes a focus on garden design. We are grateful to
Jane Stewart, a leading garden designer in the South West, for her contribution. We also include final news on the new ‘Landscape’ event in April and wish the team behind it well in developing the event to a wider audience. The April/May edition will focus on a plethora of trade event news from Germany, France and the UK so please ensure your news from these shows reaches us on time!
