The Good News
Eight lucky chickens upgraded their home recently by being rescued by the aptly named Good Estate Agent. They have moved from a cramped, ugly battery farm to a large country home with garden and lovely views. A good agent can find the perfect home for anyone!
The stressed battery hens had been collected from the British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) by an agent who casually mentioned it to one of his vendors. Imagine his surprise when the lady disappeared for a few moments and returned to give him some small woolly jumpers she had knitted, complete with little buttons! They had been specially designed to keep featherless fowl warm in the winter until their plumage grows back.
The BHWT is a charity that encourages people to save hard-working, egg producing birds from
eventual slaughter to live healthy, happy lives. The hens will continue laying eggs after they have settled in to their new homes. The Trust says that its ultimate aim is to see consumers and food manufacturers buying only UK produced free range eggs so that all future commercial laying hens enjoy a good quality of life.
If you don’t have the space to re-house some hens yourself you can participate in the Trust’s sponsor a hen scheme. You will find this and other useful information including how to care for your new hens on the website
www.bhwt.org.uk
The Trust has some famous supporters including Jamie Oliver, Pam Ayres and Amanda Holden. So why not join them? Have a heart and help a hen.
