New Ideas for Chronic Pain
Pain from an ankle, knee or back sprain is a simple problem to cure. But those persistent pains that never go away or keep recurring require more skill in analysing, treating and preventing reoccurrence.
Persistent pain that is present for more than 6 weeks will not usually improve by just continuing to reduce the inflammation and keeping it moving as this only addresses the mechanical aspect of the problem. Other physiological processes are now at work in your body that need to be looked at.
Perhaps
• muscle weakness is not allowing you to hold yourself in a balanced way?
• to relieve the pain you have adopted poor postural habits which now are preventing healing?
• your sitting posture at work or home is not ideal?
• your diet is hindering resolution of the inflammation ?
Undoubtedly your emotions will also become involved at such times and its natural enough to be asking yourself questions like:
‘Why me?’ ’What’s wrong and why now?’ ‘Will I be stuck like this for life?’
These reactions contribute to a change in the hormones, brain transmitters, perceptions and the general feeling of wellbeing. Science has found, through scanning the brain, that changes in certain areas where such experiences and those of pain are felt, cannot be successfully treated with medication alone. Pain can now be felt even after the injury has healed. The body is now recognised to be in a “chronic inflammatory ”state.
