Hythe embraces the Transition Network by Martin Whybrow
A wide range of projects has commenced as Hythe embraces the transition network scheme. The organisers would be delighted to hear from anyone who would like to be involved, either in the initial projects or with ideas for others.
Those kick-off projects include a bug hotel scheme involving local primary schools. A community allotment project is also underway, with the group liaising with the council to find a suitable site. Tree and hedge planting will complement existing local initiatives. A garden swap will link those unable to look after their gardens with those with time to help. Ecobags will help to remove plastic bags from the town and spread the word about the overall scheme. A green greeting scheme for visitors is also planned, so too a thermal camera project to allow residents to identify heat loss from their
homes. And a website is under construction to spread the word and keep everyone informed.
In Hythe, there was broad support and interest for the ‘reskilling’ aspect of the Transition Scheme, including harnessing skills from older generations. It turned out there were knitting, mosaic and mud daubing skills within the mix! There is also a study under way to see how to encourage greater use of local retailers, particularly in light of the imminent opening of Sainsbury’s.

Marathon Fundraising
On 17th April, this year, Debbie Southern will be running the London Marathon, in order to raise money for The Children’s Society.
The Children’s Society is a charity that her disabled daughter Mollie uses to access a fun club, where her special needs are catered for, giving one to one care. They firmly believe every child deserves a childhood.
Mollie was born with a range of disabilities including Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy & Hydrocephalus. Mollie attended The Children’s Centre special needs pre-school in Hythe and now attends The Children’s Society Disability Project at Hythe Youth Centre. It enables Mollie to have some fun & imaginative play & gives her access to leisure opportunities. It allows Mollie to have some independence & attend a group specifically for her & her friends.
