ess than two years ago, Dr. Brandi L. Iovino founded Primary Care of Mystic

with her husband, Dr. Louis C. Iovino, because she felt that the field of medicine was becoming less patient focused. “I wanted to practice medicine in an environment where I could spend time with my patients without having to ‘rush’ through the day. Really listening to my patients makes it easier for them to open up and reveal situations or symptoms they might not reveal otherwise. If you don’t trust your doctor, and are not able to tell him/her personal things, there could be some important information that could be missed or unaddressed for a very long time.” Brandi feels fortunate to work

with her husband who can be a help when she needs to play detective. “If I have a difficult case, I can usually discuss it with Lou to get ideas on what he thinks might be going on and visa versa. It’s like getting two doctors for the price of one!” The Iovinos, who are osteopathic

physicians, practice a “whole person” approach to medicine. Brandi, who has a special interest in women’s health and preventative cardiovascular disease, also focuses on general preventative care. “One of the issues I seem to be dealing with a lot is Vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency. Low Vitamin D can lead to fatigue, joint or bone pain,

predispose Osteoporosis, etc..

trying to educate my patients in the importance of adequate Vitamin D in the diet and in adequate supplementation, especially in women who are post menopausal, as inadequate amounts can lead to deficiencies or other problems with bone health down the road.” Growing up, Brandi knew

something of the medical field through her mother who was a registered nurse. It was during her high school years that she decided to give the field a try. “I had an interest in science and began doing volunteer work at a hospice agency in my community. It was from there that I became more interested in medicine and caring for people while they are ill, as well as, trying to keep them healthy.”

Brandi, now 32, lives with her

husband and two-year-old son, Eli, in Mystic. She works 20 hours a week, Monday – Thursday, at Primary Care of Mystic and shares childcare responsibilities with her husband. “It has worked nicely for both of us and our son who gets some exposure with other children part of the time in child care. Everyone wins!” Brandi Iovino, D.O., is Board

Certified in both Internal Medicine and Family Medicine and is still accepting new patients. Appointments with either Dr. Brandi L. Iovino or Dr. Louis C. Iovino can be scheduled by calling 860.572.2988. Primary Care of Mystic is at 41 East Main Street. To post your comments, visit:
