GREAT DAY TRIPS
MANZANITA Only a short drive from the Astoria-Warrenton area
For a little rest and relaxation, consider Manzanita, a quiet and quaint seaside village, still sleepy but slowly awakening.
You’ll find Manzanita (the name means “little apple” in Spanish) 13 miles south of Cannon Beach.
Manzanita recreation There are plenty of recreational sports to be found around Man- zanita: golf, horseback riding, bike rentals, beachcombing, kayaking or hiking at Nehalem Bay State Park and Oswald West State Park.
For information about the towns of Manzanita, Nehalem and Wheeler, contact the Chamber of Commerce at (877) 368-5100, or at
www.nehalembaychamber.com. The chamber of commerce is at 327 Nehalem Blvd. in Wheeler.
Manzanita Beach Manzanitans are very proud of their white sand, pristine Manzanita Beach, which stretches seven miles from the base of Neahkahnie Mountain to the Nehalem Bay jetty at the south, where seals are apt to bark a greeting from the rocks.
Neahkahnie Mountain • Manzanita The mountain-sea combo becomes even more breathtaking when hiking Neahkahnie Mountain. From the top, the panoramic view is unforgettable.
It’s so memorable that a Manzanita brochure claims the sight is the third-most photographed in Oregon.
To get to the trail’s start, look for the International Hiker sign on U.S. Highway 101 while heading north toward Cannon Beach.
GREAT DAY TRIPS NEHALEM Only a short drive from the Astoria-Warrenton area
Nestled in a lush green valley, the historic town of Nehalem sits on the edge of the Nehalem River. Incorporated as a town in 1899, Nehalem has retained its historic charm as well as its natural beauty. Downtown, many of the building facades are reminiscent of the store fronts seen in movies the Old West.
The Nehalem Antique and Collectible Mall on the north end of town is akin to a small museum where everything is for sale. The phone number is (503) 368-7190.
On the south side of town, the Nehalem Dock Restaurant has a big deck overlooking the Nehalem River.
Nehalem Bay State Park lies to the north of town. For more information, call (503) 368-5154 or (800) 551-6949.
