GREAT DAY TRIPS

CANNON BEACH Only a short drive from the Astoria-Warrenton area

The coastal village of Cannon Beach has been known through the West as an artists’ colony. Dominating the town and inspiring awe in tourists and residents is the magnificent monolith, Haystack Rock, accompanied by a two-mile swath of beach.

Haystack Rock • Cannon Beach A must-see for visitors and artists in Cannon Beach is the town’s famed Haystack Rock right on the beach. The world’s third-largest monolith stands at 235 feet.

The other monoliths near Haystack Rock are called the Needles.

Keep a lookout for Cannon Beach’s unofficial mascot who loves to nest on Haystack Rock during the summer: the tufted puffin. The black birds have orange bills and white feathers above their eyes appearing in tufts.

Another popular feature at Haystack Rock is its tide pools of starfish, anemone and little crabs. Summer programs are offered for visitors. Haystack Rock is a federally-designated marine garden and its sea life is protected. Visitors are not allowed to remove life forms or climb on the rocks.

Ecola State Park • Cannon Beach Just north of Cannon Beach, Ecola State Park is a prime spot for whale watching and picnics. The great expanse of Oregon rain forest in the park is laced with trails and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, Cannon Beach, Haystack Rock and the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse. Ecola State Park is a good bird-watching site and interpretive signs describe the bird species that thrive here, including puffins, herons, murres and cormorants.

The park has restrooms, picnic tables and barbecue facilities. It’s a day-use only state park, and there is an entrance fee.
