ASTORIA MUSIC FESTIVAL JUNE 17 - 26, 2011


The Ninth Annual Astoria Music Festival at the Liberty Theater and other historic venues in Astoria takes place from June 17 to 26, under the leadership of Artistic Director Keith Clark.


The Festival was awarded the 2008 Ovation Award as Oregon’s “Best Performing or Fine Arts Festival” by the Oregon Festivals and Events Association.


In celebration of the Astoria Bicentennial, the Festival will begin each symphony concert with an Astorian fanfare, composed by Oregon composers. Other Bicentennial selections will include Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, composed in 1811, when Astoria was founded. Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto will feature soloist Sh- eryl Staples of the New York Philharmonic. A concert on Handel and the Madness of the King and music of Mozart and Mahler will be performed.

The Festival welcomes renowned American soprano Ruth Ann Swenson, acclaimed for triumphs at the Metropolitan and San Francisco operas.


In celebration of Astoria’s historic families, teatime concerts will be presented at the Flavel House.


Soloists Sergey Antonov, Elizabeth Pitcairn and John Duykers will return. The North Coast Chorale, Cannon Beach Chorus and the Maddox Dance Studio will again join the Festival.


Baroque and classical renditions of the Greek myth of Princess Ariadne will culminate in Richard Strauss’ romantic opera “Ariadne auf Naxos.” A Grand Finale of festival all-stars will conclude the 2011 Festival.
