LOWER COLLEGE Induction of new girls
Great care is taken with the induction of new girls at every age. About 75 girls start in LC1, about 15 girls join LC2 and about 45 in LC3. They are all given plenty of help to allow them to integrate quickly. There are Parent Teacher meetings for each year group and, in addition to this, parents are always welcome to contact their daughter’s Housemistress, Tutor or the Head of Lower College.
Academic Programme
From LC1 girls are taught by ability in Mathematics, French and English; Latin is set from LC2.
In LC1 and LC2 girls take English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, French, Latin (in LC2), History, Geography, Religious Studies, Technology (Food and Textiles), ICT, Art, Drama, Music and PE. They have subject prep every weekday evening.
Good working practices are quickly established. Solid foundations are laid, both in the content of what they learn and the manner in which they
work. A girl’s later success at College, university and beyond is built on these foundations.
In LC3 girls take eleven core subjects. Additionally, they are invited to choose a second foreign language or Classics subject and two creative options from a choice of four. At the moment, they choose their additional language or Classics option from French, Spanish, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Latin or Classical Civilisations; creative subjects are selected from Technology, Art, Drama and Music.
There are internal examinations each year in June; these are used to test how much a girl has learned, to teach her how to revise and how to approach examinations. In most subjects an additional test is set for LC3 girls in November. This provides important information for assessing girls’ strengths and weaknesses and allows us to use the rest of the year to ensure they are ready to start the GCSE courses.
Lower College has its own library staffed by a professional librarian and junior girls have access to a number of networked computer rooms.
Sport and Extra-Curricular Activities in Lower College
During LC1 and LC2 each girl has five hours of PE per week. In the Autumn this involves hockey, lacrosse, netball, dance, gymnastics, and swimming. During the Summer girls try tennis, athletics, swimming, rounders and cricket.
In LC3 girls have four hours of sport each week. They choose two options from hockey, lacrosse and netball. They then select three further options from a range of sports including badminton, basketball, dance, gymnastics, squash, swimming and volleyball. During the Summer term girls swim, play tennis, rounders or cricket and do athletics. Girls also follow a course in outdoor education, including orienteering, camp-craft and map-reading, which culminates in an inter-house orienteering competition.
