BOARDING LIFE
7
About 50 boarders join College at age 11 in LC1, with others joining in LC2, LC3, UC4 and in the Sixth Form. The total number of boarders is around 645. In Lower and Upper College, girls live in one of the junior boarding houses, homely places run by a Housemistress and with a high ratio of staff to girls.
The boarding houses are a short walk from the main College and the girls appreciate the distinct separation of the different areas of their life. During the winter they return to their house in the evening by College bus. There are guidelines about crossing roads and walking in small groups; although Cheltenham is regarded as a safe place to live the girls’ safety is uppermost in our minds.
The food is excellent and there is always a wide choice. New girls are invariably surprised by how good the catering is and we regard it as essential that this excellent quality is maintained. Older girls have access to kitchens in which they can cook snacks for themselves.
The Housemistresses are in regular contact with the teachers of the girls in their house. Tutors regularly visit girls in their houses, often for mentoring sessions and to have lunch or supper. Leadership and responsibility are shared among the senior girls in each house; College prefects are elected.
All houses follow the same routines and College rules are applied consistently to all girls whatever their house.
When girls go into the sixth form they move into one of the Sixth Form Houses which are organised in ways more suitable to older girls.
Girls who are ill do not stay in the houses but are moved to the Medical Centre which is staffed throughout the day and night by expert and fully- qualified staff and supported by local doctors, both male and female.
