COLLEGE LIFE - THE DAY AND THE YEAR The Year as a whole

The academic year is divided into three terms: the Autumn term usually lasts for about fourteen weeks, the Spring and Summer terms for about twelve weeks each. During each term there is a break during which boarders return home, and a number of exeat weekends when most girls go home or to their guardian. During these weekends a boarding house is kept open for those who choose to stay at College.

During the holidays, particularly at Easter and in the Summer, there are a number of field trips and visits to other countries for language, geographical, historical or cultural courses. Frequently, senior sports teams tour abroad.

The Summer term ends with a Leavers’ Service and Speech Day. On the evening of Speech Day the Leavers host a ball for their parents, teachers and friends.

The Daily Routine

Weekdays begin with Registration, normally followed by Prayers and eight 30 minute morning lessons. Each day there is a long lunch break when girls return to their houses, or may stay at College for additional Music or Drama lessons. In the afternoon, after Registration, girls have a further four lessons. After school finishes at 4:40pm, girls have tea followed by extra- curricular activities, prep or they return to their house for some free time.

The Weekends

The Saturday morning enrichment programme enables girls to learn new skills, to broaden their general knowledge and to develop their creative skills and independent thinking.

Lower College girls have a range of stimulating and enjoyable activities including field trips, creative workshops and visits from writers. Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme (D of E) activities are incorporated into the Upper College programme to prepare the girls for their expeditions. Sixth Form girls can take up new skills such as Beginners’ Russian and Creative Writing. Many girls are involved in Young Enterprise, Amnesty International and Model United Nations or attend courses such as Philosophy or Film or learning to cook. Higher Education advice and careers guidance also form part of the Saturday Programme. Our Music Scholars have a programme of activities on Saturdays and the afternoons are usually given over to sports matches, either played at home or away.

On Sunday girls in Upper and Lower College attend a service at College or a local church. Sometimes the whole school attends a College Sunday Service.
