COLLEGE AND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
TO PUPILS JOINING IN LOWER COLLEGE
The College is involved in the local community of Cheltenham in very many different ways.
Girls help with many charitable causes – from supporting local charities to setting up schemes themselves. Among the many schemes at present are a Literacy Programme in local primary schools; Saturday help for mothers of handicapped children; work with the Open Door programme helping to cook breakfasts for homeless people and women from the Women’s Refuge. Other local projects include dog-walking at the local rescue centre and support for the Gloucestershire Association for the Blind and the Lilian Faithfull home.
Each year College chooses six charities which are the focus of a number of fund-raising events. Recently these have included charities working to eliminate river blindness in Africa and those that train and use dogs to search for victims of earthquakes and other disasters.
Girls take part in local events such as the Literature, Science and Music Festivals and the Cheltenham Competitive Festival. Jointly with local schools, conferences involving expert speakers in Religious Studies, History, Geography and History of Art have been hosted by College departments. There are several lectures in the Principal’s Lecture Series each year which attract speakers from the highest ranks of media, business and politics.
College is in the centre of Cheltenham and this provides excellent opportunities to play a part in the cultural and educational life of the town.
Before you apply for a place at College we hope you will visit. Perhaps you will come on one of the Open Days or on an individual tour. If you are thinking of being a boarder but are not yet sure, we would be very happy to arrange for you to stay in one of the boarding houses. You are welcome to bring a friend with you to try it out if this would help!
Whether you are going to be a boarder or a day girl, you might be imagining what life is like here. College is probably larger than your present school but do not worry about this. The older girls and the teachers are very good at making people feel at home, and you will quickly find there are many advantages to being in a large school. You will have lots of opportunities to make friends and will always be able to find other people who share your interests.
Indeed, before you join you will be able to visit your house at the end of the Summer term, and one of the girls in the year above will write to you and look after you when you arrive. She will be able to answer most of your questions or, if not, will find someone that can!
