ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Art
Art is taken by all girls in Lower College and is an option for GCSE and in the sixth form. As a centre of excellence within College, the Art department places a very firm emphasis on the teaching and acquisition of the fundamental skills of drawing and painting. We offer a wide variety of opportunities for girls to develop their skills in ceramics, screen-printing, sculpture and etching.
The Art department’s purpose-built Art and Technology wing brings together the many strands of Art, Design and Technology education at College with professional artistic staff and a photographer-in-residence.
Each year some girls go on to Art College, either to study for a degree or to follow a Foundation Course before going on to university to read another subject.
Sport
In addition to the specific options listed earlier in this booklet the following information might be of interest.
All girls take exercise each week and girls below the fifth form have specialised coaching in a number of sports. At the very least this equips them to hold their own on a tennis court and to swim but for many it will lead to playing for the College, the county, region or even a national side.
College competes in all major competitions and sports and in the last ten years has been a finalist in national competitions in several major sports. Equally importantly, the PE department fosters a ‘Sport for All’ policy. It encourages girls to acquire skills and to discover an activity they can play well and enjoy for life.
The College sports facilities are constantly upgraded and, at present, comprise a modern swimming pool, a large sports hall with a full indoor hockey pitch, six badminton courts, excellent squash courts, two volleyball courts and a tennis, netball or basketball court. There is a large fitness suite as well as two synthetic-turf hockey pitches, grass pitches, three lacrosse pitches, 24 tennis courts of county standard, 17 netball pitches and many club standard facilities for athletics.
SFC girls also travel to use the dry-ski slope in Gloucester, to row on the River Severn or to play golf. The range of sports offered is always being extended: some girls have recently chosen to learn kick-boxing and fencing is enjoying something of a renaissance.
Whatever a girl’s ability at sport she will have many opportunities to pursue it throughout her time at College.
The Hartpury Riding Centre
College girls use the riding facilities at Hartpury, a few miles from Cheltenham. It is set in 1500 acres of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and consists of grassland and beech woods. Girls can ride both during the week and at weekends. A girl does not need to have her own pony but both working and full livery arrangements are available for those that do.
Girls who are keen on polo use the training facilities at Longdole in the Cotswolds.
