UPPER COLLEGE Upper College

When they move into Upper College girls meet a new Head of Division but retain the continuity of their Tutor from LC3. Having helped a girl to choose her combination of subjects, the Tutor is best placed to see her through the two years of GCSE and IGCSE courses. A combination of class tutorials and individual mentoring programmes helps girls to settle quickly and to establish good examination study skills. The Tutor will help with study skills and revision techniques well before the January and June examinations to ensure that girls can achieve their best and are ready for the challenges that lie ahead.

Academic Programme

Girls take courses leading to ten or eleven GCSEs or IGCSEs. All take English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, at least one Science, at least one modern language and a course in ICT. They choose four or five more subjects depending on their interests and all reasonable combinations of subjects are offered.

In a year group of 135 about 85% will take two or more sciences, some will take three modern languages and a large number will take Art. College offers excellent teaching in every area of the curriculum so whatever a girl’s interests she will find she is surrounded by teachers and pupils who are very enthusiastic about their work. In Upper College girls are given more responsibility for organising their own time. For example, prep will be set to be handed in one week or perhaps two weeks later and gradually they discover how to organise work in such a way that it is not always left until the last minute. This is just one way in which College prepares girls for the increasing demands of sixth form studies, university and beyond.

Some pupils take Maths external examinations a year early but most girls take all their subject exams in UC5. In most subjects at College the content of the lessons throughout UC5 will take girls well beyond the level required for GCSE itself and this builds confidence and interest. All grades achieved are extremely high and, in no small

part, contribute to the success rate achieved by College in placing girls in the universities of their choice.

In UC5 girls begin to think about their sixth form choices. The size of the College and its consequent flexibility allows us to timetable an astonishing number of different combinations; Tutors are able to advise and guide a girl on the path most likely to bring her fulfilment and success.
