LOWER COLLEGE Clubs and Societies

Lower College girls have many opportunities to belong to clubs and societies throughout the week and at weekends. The types of activities currently on offer include: Ones’ Club, Debating, Art Club, Street Dance, Drama Club and Junior Philosophy. There are many sports clubs including hockey, lacrosse, indoor hockey, judo, squash, dance, basketball, swimming, gymnastics, netball, fencing and badminton; a number of girls go horse riding at Hartpury. Musically, a great deal is on offer: choirs, Flute Choir, chamber groups, Jazz Band, String Serenaders, Wind Band, Sinfonia and Symphony Orchestra.

At the start of each year a Lower College Societies’ Fair is held when girls can visit displays and meet staff who run the clubs. After discussion with their Tutor girls make their choices, bearing in mind all their commitments. Those who learn musical instruments, who have private speech and drama lessons or have extra lessons in Maths or English have to be careful not to over-commit themselves. We find they are so enthusiastic at this age that some discussion is a good idea!

Towards the end of the Summer term Lower College enjoys Project Week. For one week the normal timetable is rearranged to enable girls to follow various cross-curricular projects. In recent years these have included engineering and design projects, disability awareness activities and themed activities on the sea and flight.
