A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... | 67
delighted to take up. I spent four seasons with them before signing a contract back in Scotland.
How do you overcome any nerves in competitions? I think nerves are a good thing as long as you are thinking positively. I get nervous when taking kicks at goal but the practice I do gives me confidence as I know I have kicked it before in training.
Do you consider your sport as a hobby or a job? Both. Because I love the game it seems like a hobby but I need to be serious about my training and fitness levels and that’s what makes it a job.
Do you play any other sports? I enjoy a good game of golf, tennis and squash.
Which sports person do you admire? Roger Federer. He makes tennis look so easy and wins matches barely breaking sweat but also manages to win consistently.
How do you train? We usually train five days a week. Training consists of three rugby sessions, two to three weights sessions, a speed session and video analysis of us and our opposition.
What do get out of training? Rugby players are getting bigger and stronger all the time so the gym work prepares your body to handle the collisions made in the game. It also helps with improving your power and speed.
How long does a typical workout session last? It usually lasts around an hour and will consist of around five to six exercises. Sessions will include one lower body exercise and the rest concentrate on upper body.
Do you have a healthy diet? There is a full time nutritionist employed by the SRU and he advises the players on what to eat. He also does a fat test on us every three months to make sure everyone is following his advice.
Do you take any dietary supplements? Protein shakes. Because of the amount of training we do, the muscles in our bodies are constantly being broken down and protein shakes allow us to recover quicker as it helps repair those muscles quickly.
Finally what’s your unhealthy vice? Crisps.
