WHS Swimmers End Season with a Big Splash

submitted by Rhonda Bleeker The Jaguars coed varsity swim team competed in its last regular season meet on January 28 with a meet against Hollis-Brookline High School, Campbell High School (women’s team only), Londonderry High School, and The Derryfield School at the WCWC in Londonderry. The pool deck was filled with excited swimmers and spectators at this final Londonderry & Campbell home meet. Many of the Windham High School (WHS) swimmers placed among the top six and nearly all the swimmers had one or more personal bests at this meet. For the WHS women’s team,

Julia Bushell placed second in both the 200 Free and the 500 Free with a very close race for first in both events and an improvement on her qualify states time in the 500 Free. Emily Matsco’s 200 Free swim earned her a fourth place and an improvement on her states qualifying time. Emily also placed sixth in the 100 Breast. Meghan O’Connor placed first in the 100 Back and second in the 100 Free with an improvement on her states- qualifying time in both events. Lauren Clemons scored a sixth place in the 100 Fly and Bethanny Fennessey placed sixth in the 500 Free. Ornalin Anancharoenpakorn also swam a personal best in the 100 Free and Megan Boucher swam a personal best in the 100 Back, both taking several seconds off in their events. The team of Lauren, Julia, Emily, and Angela placed third in the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Angela, Julia, Meghan, and Emily finished the meet with a very close race in the 400 freestyle relay, placing second in this event with a time of 4:03.05 and improving on the team’s states- qualifying time

in the event. For the WHS men’s team, James Baiguy placed third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:29.95, earning him a states-qualifying time in this event. Christopher Gallo placed fourth in the 500 Free. Ben Forster and Kyle Carbonneau placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 200 Free. Kyle’s 200 Free time, as well as his time in the 100 Free, were significant improvements over his personal best times from prior meets. February 25, 2011 - 9 Sports

by Marc Ayotte On Thursday, February 17, Milford High School

came to the Snake Pit in Pelham for a Division III girls’ varsity basketball game. Although the Spartans came into play with a 4-11 record, they were riding a three-game winning streak. The Lady Pythons, winners of their last game the night before against Whittier Tech (Massachusetts), entered the contest with a similar 4-12 record. A second-half scoring drought by the Pythons featured a Spartan third-quarter run of 14-4, creating a lead Pelham just could not overcome, as Milford defeated the hometown blue and white by a score of 59-47. Playing their fourth game in as many

nights, the Pythons came out surprisingly and uncharacteristically strong. An unfortunate season- long trademark for the Pythons has been digging first-half holes they could not escape out of. This night would have a different story line. Although Milford got out to a quick, 8-2 lead two minutes in, Pelham was then able to start putting the ball in the hole as a full-court drive and lay-up by Gina Grimes tied the score at 12. A last-second defensive lapse by Pelham allowed MHS to return the favor with a full-court dash and lay-up of their own, ending the quarter with the Spartans holding on to a slim, 14-12 lead. Milford opened up the second quarter with a 5-0

spurt, which pushed the lead to seven before Rebecca Debaldo’s ’tres’ stopped the bleeding, making the score 19-15 in favor of the visiting Spartans.

In a

fast-paced, exciting game that saw a lot of interior scoring as a result of fast-break lay-ups, it also saw many turnovers. Pelham was coming up on the short end of the turnover scenario, as the scoreboard showed Milford with a somewhat comfortable eight- point lead with a minute and a half remaining in the first half. And then on a dime, the Pythons turned their stagnant offense into a quarter-ending 7-0 run. With 1:26 left, Debaldo converted on two free-throw attempts to cut the deficit to 25-19. After being fouled on her triple attempt, Alicia Gendron went to the line and cashed in on all three shots from the charity stripe with 23 ticks left on the clock. A balanced Python scoring sheet, seeing five players score in the first 16 minutes of action, kept PHS within three at the half, 25-22. Four seconds into the second half, the Python

inspiring ‘tres’ to start the third, but a quick retaliation basket by Milford kept the Python deficit in double digits. Every early fourth-quarter run by Pelham was answered by the Spartans until just under five minutes remained. As testimony to the conditioning and effort of the Python hoopsters, they did not let the effects of four games in four days deter making one more run. Down by 10 at 46-36, back-to-back hoops by Grimes cut the Milford lead to six. After a Milford basket, a steal and lay-up by Catalano, along with two free throws by Grimes, pulled the Pythons to within four points at 48-44 with 2:48 remaining in the contest. However, continued Python fouls in an attempt to make Milford win the game at the line resulted in just that. Phenomenal free throw shooting by the Spartans’ Pistas, Landry, and Donovan, draining 11 of 13 attempts down the stretch, cemented the Milford road win. In the scoring column, Gendron led the Python attack, recording

WHS State Track Meet Results

submitted by Ryan O’Connor, Windham High School On Sunday at the State Track and Field Championships at Dartmouth College, six athletes representing Windham High School (WHS) competed and six came home with medals by placing in the top six of their events. Leading the way with individual places were sophomores Kate Farrell and Mike Sheahan. Farrell flew by several runners and placed fifth in the 3000-meter run, where she was ranked ninth going in, and Sheahan gutted out the final straightaway and placed sixth in the 600-meter dash, when he was ranked 10th. Following their successes, the boys’ 4x200 meter relay team of juniors Kennie Padin, Derek Gray, Dan Warner, and CJay DiPrima closed out the day with a hard-fought and exciting fifth- place finish. Congratulations to all participants and to the entire indoor track team for a very successful and memorable season.

Local Gymnasts Compete at Season’s First Sectionals

submitted by Peggy Hawkins On February 5, Spectrum Gymnastics Academy’s girls’ team did a fantastic job qualifying for the State Championship meet at this season’s first Sectional at Granite State Gymnastics in Bow. To qualify for States, a gymnast needs an all-around score of 33.0 or higher. This is the first of New Hampshire’s two Sectionals. “Many of our gymnasts qualified for States. And a lot of our new Level 4s haven’t had the experience of competing at a Sectional this year, and I couldn’t be more proud of them,” said owner and coach Sean Delisle.

Area gymnasts’ highlights were as follows: Level 4: Katie Hawkins of Windham scored third place on beam (8.6), Kathryn Boone of Windham scored second on vault (9.325), second on beam (8.925), first on floor (9.1), and second place all-around; Samantha Parzych of Litchfield scored first on vault (9.3), first on bars (9.3), first on beam (8.775), first on floor (9.175), and first place all-around. Level 6: Christina Marra of Litchfield scored second place on vault (9.05), first place on bars (8.5), first place on floor (8.85), and first place all- around.

deficit was cut to a single point as Python senior Alex Catalano took the second half tip and drove in from half court for a lay-up. An immediate answer by Milford’s Donovan with an ‘And 1’ pushed the Milford lead to four. With wholesale personnel changes by PHS Coach Tave continuing, the Pythons used the player rotation to keep fresh and maintain the up-tempo game. A missed Pelham field-goal attempt, resulting in a court long drive and lay-up for the Spartans’ 10 Pistas, caused Coach Tave to take a timeout with just under four minutes left in the quarter. Poor execution out of the PHS timeout resulted in a turnover. A quick hoop by Milford’s Dupis and a triple by Landry gave the visitors their biggest lead of the night at 36-26. The scoring freeze that has

haunted Pelham in the first half of games revisited this time in the second half. The Lady Pythons were able to score only four points in the first six minutes of the third quarter. With Pelham unable to even get a shot attempt off in seven of their last nine trips up the court, Milford opened up their newest biggest lead

13 points, while Grimes added nine points. Freshman Jordan Parece, who was brought up from the JV squad as part of Coach Tave’s “keep them fresh, play up-tempo” game plan, chipped in nicely with seven points. Catalano contributed nicely to the balanced Python effort, with all six of her points coming in the second half.
