submitted by North Salem School A North Salem favorite is back! It’s that time of year again for Pizza Bingo! Sponsored by the North Salem PTA, Pizza Bingo is a family fun night of pizza and bingo. Due to the popularity of this event, there will be two nights of Pizza Bingo, the first on Friday, March 4, for Grades K-2, and the second on Friday, March 11, for Grades 3-5. Cheese pizza will be served from 6 to 6:30 p.m., followed by bingo. Please bring your own beverages. Kudos to our fifth-grade class, who were servers at our annual Pasta Palooza dinner, which was a huge success! The fifth graders who participated in the event not only looked like professional waiters complete with their aprons and notepads, but also managed to act like professionals, serving up a delicious meal of pasta,

meatballs, salad, and dessert to a crowd of over 170 people! A huge thank-you goes out to McKinnon’s Market for donating all the pasta and the sauce! Everyone was raving about the sauce; it was delicioso! Another big thank-you goes out to Patty Scanlan and her group of volunteers who organized the event, and to all the parents who donated amazing desserts. Our Read-A-Thon, America Reads!, continues, and students are making wonderful progress turning in their reading slips. The Read-A-Thon will conclude on April 15. Students who complete all five boards will receive a reading medal at a special ceremony that will take place during our annual Spring Open House, which is scheduled for Thursday, April 21. At the great rate our students are going, it will be hard not to earn a medal.
North Salem
submitted by North Salem School Extra, extra—read all about it! The Panther Press made its official debut in February. A brand-new, student-run newspaper, The Panther Press will be featuring stories about North Salem staff and students, as well as different sections, including What’s Happening, Who’s Who, Construction Updates, Ask Panther, Jokes and Riddles, and even a coloring contest! The newspaper staff includes Meredith Harvey, Ryan Greeley, Jimmy Desmond, Meghan Prince, Kayleigh Greenfield, Olivia Champagne, Matthew Tiller, Andrew Thedsanamoorthy, Alex Borghetti, Brian Hewett, and TJ Scanlon. Volume 1 is hot off the press and is on the newsstand now! Actually, it’s on the school’s Website; check it out at www.
sau57.org/northsalem. We thank Mrs. Richard for working with the students to make The Panther Press a reality. Start checking those pockets and seat cushions for those extra pennies—the Power of the Penny Contest is back! The annual contest is among the grade levels to see which grade level can earn the most points by collecting spare change. But here’s the twist! Instead of being the coin that no one bothers to pick up off of the ground, this time the penny is worth the most (one point each!). Nickels, dimes, and quarters have negative values (-5 points, -10 points, and -25 points). The contest will run from February 28 – March 25. Donations of change may be put in any grade level

container. (So, the best strategy for winning is to put all of your pennies in your grade level container, and then put any nickels, dimes, or quarters into another grade level’s container so they will lose points.) The winning grade level will win a pizza or sundae party. The change will be used to purchase new playground equipment that will be installed once school construction is complete. Volunteers are still needed for Pizza Bingo! Sponsored by the North Salem PTA, Pizza Bingo is a family fun night of pizza and bingo, and will be held on Friday, March 4, for Grades K-2, and again on Friday, March 11, for Grades 3-5. Parents may contact the school if they wish to volunteer. Haigh School Second Graders Explore ‘Community’
by Robyn Hatch Haigh School’s second graders from
Miss John and Miss Meisser’s classes did an incredible show about “community” to the delight of parents and friends. Music Director Mrs. Moldof had chosen songs that fit the theme; specifically, “where do we live?” The children wore colorful signs such as “Town Planner” and “Police Chief” around their necks. The songs were happy, the kids were excited to have their parents in the audience, and it was obvious that these children were excited for their winter vacation to begin.
Upcoming date to remember:
Playground Committee meeting, Monday, February 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the school library.

submitted by Barron School Library The Barron School staff and students would like to thank everyone very much for all the purchases made at the Book Fair. Many new books will be added to the library shelves for all to read thanks to your generosity. Hopefully, the children will enjoy the books they purchased during the vacation week. After vacation, kindergarten, first, and second graders will hear selections from traditional literature such as nursery rhymes, fairy tales, folk tales, tall tales, and fables. Grades 3-5 will practice using research books, including the dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, atlas, and almanac. Knowing which source to use and how to use it will help the students with their classroom assignments.
