It pays to have a flexible approach I
t doesn’t seem that long ago that there was almost a surplus of work around for CGI artists to choose from… Turmoil in the housing market has taken its toll on developers and suppliers alike, but for those with a flexible approach to business, the work and the
clients are still there. Concept Creative Services started some 25 years ago
building architectural models for the house building industry. The computer started to play a part in building models a long time ago, creating artwork for windows and etched parts, and outlines for laser or CNC cutting, so it became a natural progression to start producing elevations and perspectives. “We started off by offering a few pictures to existing clients alongside the models” said Nigel Cartwright, a director of Concept Creative. “The learning curve was steep, but it wasn’t long before word got around and new clients were coming to us”. It’s important to understand that there are different ways
of producing a CGI. “Some companies produce an image by generating the building and site in a 3D package, and then ‘paste in’ the cars, people and landscaping. The problem here is that if the image needs to be changed, a lot of work needs to be repeated. We made the decision early on to computer generate everything, the landscaping, cars and people – all exist as computer models. If colours or the viewpoint are changed, we can re-render the image very quickly, often within
hours. You also end up with an image with a consistent style”. By offering CGIs alongside physical models, Concepts
clients also benefit from only having to deal with one supplier.“We are often the first people to have looked at a development besides the architect, so we tend to find the inevitable snags as we build the models and the pictures – sorting these out in one go makes things quicker all round” said Nigel. Concept has traditionally concentrated on high-resolution
print images, over the lower detail of ‘fly through’ animations, although that is changing. “There are too many limitations with pre-animated videos - we now have the technology to be able to create a computer model of a development, drop a virtual camera into the middle of it, and move around the site, in real time, looking anywhere you want. To be able to wander around a property or development before it has been built is now possible” By deploying the ‘walk-around’ via a web page, buyers can look around a development at their leisure. Concept Creative Services were one of the first companies to offer CGIs, and are now one of the first to offer live walk-arounds. With physical models and CGIs too, Concept offer a full creative service to all property developers.
