Buying Local and Buying in Bulk at Tidal Creek
C
ontinuous growth and change is how Tidal
Creek Cooperative Food Market meets the needs and demands of its 3,000+ owners and other customers. Two of its latest initiatives – a local promotional plan (LPP) and value-added incentives to buy in bulk – are in direct response to the value co-op customers expressed for products with the smallest environmental impact dur- ing a recent survey. Through the end of March, customers get 5 percent off on dry, liquid, beauty and mixed greens bulk items, but the co-op’s bulk-buying initiative goes beyond financial incentives. Tidal Creek started back in the 70’s as a buyer’s club, with its members purchasing items in mass and dividing them up in the basement of a local church, so it should come as no surprise that the co-op wants to share all of the benefits of buying in bulk with people. At Bulk Savings on Saturday, March 5, Bethany Rogers will share bulk-buying health and environmental benefits, money-saving strategies and a bit of creativity with guests. The free class is from 10 to 11 a.m. LLP, a program designed to help strengthen
our local economy by promoting locally pro- duced products, is a win-win for both cus- tomers and local producers. The three-fold strategy combines education with financial incentives and introducing local producers to customers. During Becoming a Food Citizen on Tuesday, March 1, guests will learn about CSAs (community-supported agriculture) and how to actively participate in building a new, local food economy. The free class begins at 6 p.m. On March 19, the public is invited to visit Nature’s Way Farm, a local producer
in Hampstead. The Saturday of touring the farm, feeding baby goats and learning about goat cheese and Mr. Bill’s Seafood is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, with under-13 only $5 and toddlers 2 and younger free. Family passes are available for $25. In addition to future LLP classes and special events, the co-op continually intro- duces local vendors to customers through its newsletter at
www.TidalCreek.coop, sharing their photos and stories. Specific local pro- ducers will also be promoted each month, with customers reaping the financial benefit of the co-op’s matching of vendor discounts on these products. Those attending Tidal Creek’s most popu-
lar semiannual event, the Spring Food Fair, on Saturday, March 26 can count on seeing these two new incentives mixed in with all the free samples and product demonstrations from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day. T
