Kohl’s Scholarship Program accepting nominations


SanTan Sun area residents ages 21 and older are invited to nominate local youth volunteers for the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program now through March 15. The Kohl’s Department Stores program awards more than $415,000 in scholarships and prizes to young volunteers ages 6 to 18 who have made a positive impact on their communities.


Two nominees from each of Kohl’s 1,089 stores nationwide will each win a $50 Kohl’s gift card, and more than 200 nationwide will win regional scholarships worth $1,000 toward post-secondary education. Ten national winners will be awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships for post-secondary education, and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf. Since the program began in 2001, Kohl’s has awarded more than 13,000 youth volunteers with more than $2.6 million in scholarships and prizes. SanTan Sun area high school students planning to study journalism at an Arizona university or community college in fall 2011 are invited to apply for the $1,000 Arizona Press Women Memorial Journalism Scholarship, sponsored by


Arizona Press Women and the Arizona Newspapers Foundation. The application deadline is April 9, and the winner will be honored at a luncheon in the spring.


Arizona Press Women, a statewide organization of professional communicators, established the annual $1,000 scholarship honoring the memory of Betty Latty- Hurlburt, a noted Phoenix journalist who passed away in 1997. San Tan Learning Center recognizes excellence


Three exemplary staff members were recognized by San Tan Learning Center. Assistant Principal Bethany Kempel was honored for earning her National Board Certification. San Tan teachers Christina Carey and Ashley Shaffer were recognized for being outstanding advocates for and educators of gifted children at Arizona’s Association for Gifted & Talented Conference. Carey and Shaffer were the only two charter school teachers recognized in Arizona.

Chandler High School’s Theatre Department stages the 1950s-era musical “Grease” March 9 through 11 at Chandler Center for the Arts’ Hal Bogle Theater. Chandler sluggers win at Nationals


The Chandler Rangers 13U baseball team won the Winter Nationals with an 8-0 record, qualifying the team for the Elite 32 World Series.


The prestigious tournament will be held at ESPN World Wide of Sports Complex at Disney World from July 30 to Aug. 7, according to the team’s coordinator, Lisa Boyer says.


She adds that the team will host an upcoming fundraisers to help pay for the players’ travel expenses to the championship.
