Help area neighbors with home makeover


Volunteers are sought to assist with “an extreme makeover” on a central Chandler home starting at 8 a.m. Sat., Feb. 19, and in exchange, lunch will be provided by Floridino’s and Dilly’s Deli.


Vintage Chandler neighborhoods is a local nonprofi t seeking to revitalize the central Chandler neighborhoods, and will be painting the house and landscaping the front yard for a “worthy family that wants to personally contribute, but they need more manpower,” according to Scott Taylor.


Volunteers are encouraged to wear work clothes. The location is at 554 N. Sunset Dr. at Galveston in Chandler.

Neighbors Who Care hosts volunteer events


The annual Neighbors Who Care (NWC) Volunteer Recognition Event will be held over two days, Sat., March 5 and 12 with a buffet-style breakfast at the Palo Verde Country Club. The “Diamonds in the Desert” breakfast will celebrate the miles driven, services performed and hours logged by volunteers in the Sun Lakes and Southern Chandler communities. Founded in 1995, NWC is a nonprofi t human services organization that provides nine different non-medical assistive services to fulfi ll their mission to help the homebound elderly remain in their own homes with independence and dignity.

In addition, a New Volunteer Orientation is held at 1 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month at Lecky Arts & Community Center, Maricopa County Library, Ed Robson Branch at 9330 E. Riggs Rd. in Sun Lakes.


A Caregiver Discussion Group is sponsored by NWC and Area Agency on Aging, Region One, Inc. and is held at 1 p.m. on Mondays at Risen Savior Lutheran Church on the northwest corner of Alma School and Chandler Heights in Chandler. Feb. 19 - March 4, 2011 YMCA hosts child obesity seminar


Learn about the risks associated with childhood obesity at a free seminar from 6 to 7 p.m. Wed., Feb. 23 at the YMCA, 1655 W Frye Rd. in Chandler. The event, sponsored by Chandler Regional and Mercy Gilbert medical centers and the Chandler-Gilbert YMCA, will be led by board-certifi ed pediatric endocrinologist Khalid Hasan, M.D., who will discuss how to determine if a child’s weight might lead to health problems including depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and poor self-esteem.
