Follow that Star
When it comes to quality Indian food, a local Star is to be found at Whittington Moor. Mike Firth reports
I’ve enjoyed several meals here down the years and as the restaurant has expanded in size, it has also grown in reputation. I remember eating here when it was a relatively small venue; now, two extensions later, it can seat 180 diners and frequently does on Friday and Saturday evenings.
O
It wasn’t quite so busy when Twist colleague Kat and I called in at 6pm on a Thursday, but the welcome we received from manager Tariq Khan and his colleagues was warm and genuine and we were soon studying the large menu as we nibbled our way through warm, crisp popadoms and a selection of pickles.
I’ve often eaten cod from Whittington Moor, usually accompanied by a bag of chips, but my fish starter at The Star of Sall was tremendous: five pieces of white, flakey fish presented in a light, fluffy casing and served with a salad garnish (£4.95).
Across the table, colleague Kat also thoroughly enjoyed her two spicy lamb Sheek Kebabs (£3.40), served on a sizzling platter with plenty of fried onion strips, fresh salad and a slice of lemon.
With several other diners now beginning to arrive and a good number of others calling in to collect take-away meals, it was time for our main courses. Mine was Chicken Jalfrezi (£6.80) and I was impressed with the amount of meat in this tasty dish. It was quality chicken breast too, with a fabulous sauce of tomato, ginger, green peppers and herbs. I enjoyed it with a Mushroom Rice and Peshwari Nan Bread (both £2.90).
Kat, meanwhile, was drooling over the quality of her main course, one of the Chef’s Specials listed on the menu. She enjoyed four meaty pieces of Tandoori Chicken (£5.50) which has been prepared with medium spices and cooked in the restaurant’s tandoor oven. The dish was presented with a full portion of crisp, fresh salad.
Great quality food and freshly prepared - no wonder this venue has gone from strength to strength over the past 21 years. The next time I visit will be on a Monday evening to sample buffet evening at The Star of Sall. These are to be held on February 21st, 28th, March 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th and promise a four-course all-you-can-eat meal for a special offer price of just £8.95. The many fans of this venue are in for a birthday.
