Twist... and shout

Musical train of thought A

Welcome to the sixth issue of Twist - the brightest, breeziest

publication in town

Little Eva

SONG from the 60s, Twist and Shout (a big success for both The Beatles and The

Searchers) gives its name to this particular section of Twist; now we are happy to feature other chart hits from years ago. Eagle-eyed reader David Orwin noticed that in last month’s magazine we incorrectly stated that the statue of George Stephenson outside the Railway Station showed him holding a miniature Rocket (a hit for Mud in 1974).

Kylie Minogue

David, following in the footsteps of Stephenson as a successful Chesterfield design engineer, pointed out that the steam engine in question was, in fact, Locomotion (Little Eva 1962, Kylie Minogue 1988).

T’S an exciting time in Chesterfield with many colourful new buildings changing the face of our town - see above for examples. Once upon a time, however, colour was frowned upon by developers and the town’s decorating shops seemingly stocked paint only in tins of Pure Brilliant White and Jet Black. Now the town’s monochrome history is to be told in a colourful talk by local historian Janet Murphy. ‘Black and White Buildings of Chesterfield’ is to be the topic of her talk at Chesterfield Library Lecture Theatre on Tuesday, March 22nd, from 7.30pm. Tickets cost £3 (£2 concessions) and are available from the Library Help Desk.
