SIRE ROAD TESTS COGENT TWIST ET *BLF *CVF C
ogent celebrated the August proof run with a promising Shottle son in the shape of Cogent Twist. He
is the highest newcomer to the UK-bred and proven listings and he commands a PLI of £160, which is amassed due to his all round performance for both type and production. He excels for both Lifespan (0.2) and Cell Counts (-17), although this is all based on low levels of reliability as he only has 34 daughters in 19 herds in his production proof and 25 daughters in 14 herds in his type proof. As mentioned, Cogent Twist is by Picston Shottle, who needs no introduction, while his dam is Cogent Major Tex VG88. Still milking in the 1400 cow Grovesnor herd, Major Tex is sired by Looking Major (a Celcius son with good feet and legs) and she is a big production cow, so far having completed four lactations with a best record in her second at 14,650 kg at 4.31% fat and 3.18% protein (over 1000 kg combined fat and protein) in 305 days. Twist is bred from a family that has consistently bred AI bulls, as his grand dam Cogent Winchester Tex VG86 is a full sister to the proven sire Art-Acres Win 395. Winchester Tex gave 10,592 kg at 3.97% fat and 3.01% protein in her second lactation and bred Major Tex and a GP81 Mirdijk Rob daughter in her first two calvings. She was herself a fifth generation VG or EX cow bought as an embryo from the Tex family at Art-Acres as the sire stack can be traced further as VG87 Patron x VG89 Mascot x VG86 Cleitus x EX90 Ned Boy. Twist’s £160 PLI is sufficient to rank him in the Top 50

Holstein Bulls ranked on PLI in the August 2010 proofs and he is the first Shottle son to make the top 50. This is only a fraction of what his limited proof offers, in terms of produc- tion Twist has +491 kg milk coupled with positive deviations for both fat and protein (0.06% and 0.01%) respectively. The 0.2 lifespan suggests cows that will stand the test of time, and his low cell count of -17 is perhaps explained in part by his 0.08 milking speed. Management-wise, his fertility index

emex are also very happy this proof run with a multitude of
new and emerging sires, many being the first sons of the legend that has become Braedale Goldwyn, and the current cream of them would seem to be Crackholm Fever. Sales such as the recent Northern Lights have already featured embryo lots by the Goldwyn x Emory son, so what is making the heat rise around the bull? Crackholm Fever is a type special-
ist, excelling for both feet and legs and mammary system. He is ranked second for confirmation at +19 in Canada, which coverts to an Interbull UK Type Merit of 3.5. As stated, he is one of the early promising sons of Goldwyn although the November 2005-born bull has over 200 Canadian registered daughters with 112 scored (of those 87% are GP and better, with 15 VG) and with 128 daughters contributing to his production figures he is 94% reliable for production in his country of origin (72% here in the UK on his Interbull proof). Specifics of his linear include extreme height at 3.05 on stature with a general need for him to be used on a cow

with substance, as he takes more after his sire than his dam in terms of frame (chest width -0.03 and body depth 0.42). His daughters should be sloped in the rump with some width of rump. Daughters can be expected to stand up on their toes as well with -1.89 rear leg side view (very straight) and steep
foot angle (1.69). Fever’s particular strengths lie in the mam- mary, good for a 2.64 Mammary composite. Anticipate Fever daughters to have nailed on udders, tight fore udders with high rear udders and defined central ligaments, carried well above the hock (1.26). Fever will be classed an average production sire at 178 kg milk, but a good bull for improving levels of fat at 0.07% while his protein deviation is negative (-0.03%). He is a mere £11 PIN, but a more respectable £96 PLI. Lifespan at 0.2 is the same as Cogent Twist while, unsurprisingly, his lack of
