TOP NEW PROVEN SIRES EMERGE FROM AUGUST PROOF RUN
he August proof run has produced three exciting new proven bulls at the top of the list, all bred in the Deangate herd in Staffordshire. These new sires each have 30-50 milking daughters included in their proof, so it’s still early days, but they certainly look very promising at this stage. They are all bred from long lasting cows from excellent cow families:

q Deangate Quentin is by Tittenser Hylke out of Deangate Queenie 14 BFE93, who is milking in her ninth lactation
q Deangate Tarquin is by Tittenser Hylke out of Deangate Queenie 9 BFE94, who is milking in her thirteenth lactation
All three bulls combine high fat and protein production with very good scores for the management traits – daughter fertility, SCC, longevity and calving ease. I have been particularly impressed with the Quentin daughters I’ve seen. The classifiers have now inspected 34 heifers and they average over 80 points, with good scores for legs & feet and udders.

Breeders are placing increasing emphasis on daughter fertility when selecting bulls and the Friesian is an excellent choice for reducing calving intervals. The difference between the Holstein

and Friesian base is 9 points Fertility Index, equivalent to around 5 days reduced calving interval. The benefit of using a top bull, such as Quentin, is 9 days shorter calving interval due to genetics, when compared with an average Holstein bull.
