almost everyone dress up in a Roman theme, with costumes varying from a cheap sheet straight out of the packet to the splendid Centurion costumes made by classifier Alistair Bell for himself and his colleague Geoff Bone. I’m not sure that Romans were familiar with discos, but that was the impression given on that particular night in a Cheshire field as the party went on well into Sunday morning. After whatever sleep had been possible, teams made their way to Beeston Castle and Wright Manley’s market that had been generously lent for the Field to Foto competition. 21 A teams

and 8 B teams set off with the clippers at 9.15 (the electricity supply had been beefed up to cope with the surge) and the teams worked hard through the day to clip, wash, topline, show and photograph their calf. Judging the clipping were David Dunlop and Trevor Stapleton whilst Andrew Rutter and Stewart Roberts assessed the washing. Jane Arrell judged showmanship whilst Jane Steel cast her expert eye over the photography. Emerging triumphant again was the team from Scotland South, closely followed by Northern Ireland and the home team in second and third. The winning B team were

the youngsters from South Wales, with Northern Ireland and Western again filling second and third spots. Champion clipper was Andrew Kennedy from Northern Ireland, with Western’s Izzy Whittaker in second and Iwan Thomas from South Wales in third.

Reflecting on what had been another great event, the main ingredients for a successful Weekend Rally include a host club that is enthusiastic and willing to raise funds and has the commitment from all involved to make it a success. Venues are also important as are the ability to feed and water over 200 people quickly and easily. Well, the Western Club ticked all these boxes and more, and I would like to thank them again from all the competitors, friends, co-ordinators, parents and staff who enjoyed such a good weekend. As always, none of this would be possible without sponsors and our thanks also go to National sponsors Genus ABS, Keenan Nutrition and Farmers Guardian plus Weekend Rally sponsors Biotal, BCW, CIS, Fabdec, Genus ABS, HST Feeds, The Hoofman, Nantwich Veterinary Group, NWF Group, Semex UK, Showtime, WFS Minerals and World-Wide Sires. We look forward to next April and wonder what the Scotland South Club has in store for us?
