FAR LEFT A keen horsewoman, Emma is looking forward to hunting on her grey this winter.

RIGHT Lorna Murray’s pedigree Charollais and Zwartbles sheep.
bull has left a number of useful daughters around the country and is the bull of choice in the pot at the moment.
The future of this young herd is bright. With a management focus on grazing with cake to yield and limited access to a blend and haylage mix in the summer, increased in the winter to replace grass intake, 64 Jerseys have a rolling annual average of 6,209 kg at 4.13% fat and 3.72% protein, although the milk
contract is primarily volume based. When looking around for a new contract, the Murray family met with disbelief as they explained they were looking to re-enter the milk market. Dairy Crest refused a pick up citing distance as the problem, their haulage man laughed out loud and First Milk didn’t believe them. They eventually managed to persuade First Milk they were serious so secured a deal including a butterfat bonus, although not a Channel Island contract, but even friends worried them by insisting that a parlour that had been out of service for over 20 years would cause at least bactoscan problems, despite having been serviced to within an inch of its life. They are not laughing now. Emma has quietly taken on a project and with very hard graft from her and the rest of her family, succeeded to a level usually only seen when backed by hard cash. This unassuming, friendly family business deserves the banners they have hanging in the kitchen – let’s hope they have to find more wall space in the years to come.
