GENOTYPING & PARENTAGE CHECKING
Some members appear to have been confused by the difference between a parentage check and animal genotyping. All animals have a genotype, which is a description of their basic genetic material. Each parent contributes half of the DNA that makes up the animal’s genotype. When a parentage check is requested, the calf’s genotype is compared to the genotypes of its sire and dam at 11 locations along its DNA. If there aren’t sufficient matches then the par- ent will be excluded as a parent of the calf. If the DNA matches then the parentage is confirmed. Members can now obtain a genomic test through Holstein UK - see the news item opposite.
