10 OUT OF 10

The Daw name is synonymous with good cows, both Holsteins and Jerseys. This

Journal’s multi-breed celebration allows us to take a look at some of those good Jerseys – 10 EX second calvers bred over the last 10 years by Jenny and Barry Daw of the Bluegrass herd. Alison Maddrell reports

any breeders aspire to certain milestones in their career, one of which may be to breed an Excellent second calver, particularly one that goes on to prove her worth over her lifetime. Jenny and Barry have done this not once, they have repeated it again and again and are now the first breeders in the UK to have no less than 10 homebred cows to have scored 90 points in their second lactation. And in only 10 years.

The first was during 2000 and was a cow that actually carried the Kentucky prefix that was originally registered to Jenny’s parents, Bob and Peggy Clear, before Jenny took it on. Kentucky Masters Harpist EX94-3E was “a modern cow of her time – judges either loved or hated her”, explained Jenny. Despite some not taking a shine to her, Harpist was crowned Jersey Heifer Champion at the 1999 Dairy Event and Breed Champion the following year. She was no slouch in the parlour either, with her fifth lactation recording 9,145 kg at 4.73% fat and 3.54% protein in 305 days. Harpist calved five times, each time producing a heifer calf. Two daughters went on to classify EX and three scored VG88, but it was her third calf, Bluegrass Hallmarks Harp EX94-5E, who also achieved the status of EX as a second calver, adding to the Daws’ tally. Hallmarks Harp (by Schultz Brook Hallmark) was only shown once when she stood second at the Royal, but as a seventh calver still at Amwell Place Farm, she has an 88point heifer, Bluegrass Commander Heartily, milking alongside her that may improve on this. Two more EX second calvers at Bluegrass are another mother/daughter pair. Bluegrass Barbers Lady Carol EX95-6E is a WF/L&M Duncan Barber from a 92 point daughter of Windsor Lionhearts Commander. Having achieved 64,518 kg lifetime yield from seven lactations, all at over 5% fat, she calved the fourth Bluegrass EX second calver Remake Lady Singsong EX91-3E in 2002 before scoring 90 points in her second lactation. In the same year, Carol was crowned Breed Champion at the Royal and the Dairy Event as well as numerous breed and interbreed titles elsewhere. Her eldest daughter, Bluegrass Jades Lady Tara, was sold to the Wellhouse herd in Scotland where she has gone on to score EX92-4E, but it was Singsong who achieved

the magic EX-3yr target back at home. Sired by Rock Ella Remake, Singsong has also bred well and her first daughter, Bluegrass Just Wait Lady Easter born in 2005, completes four generations of EX having scored 90 points last year in her third lactation. Younger daughter Hallmarks Lady Dancer is a VG87 second calver whilst Singsong calved her sixth, a Silver Spring Belmont CJCC heifer, in May.

A very popular cow on the current show circuit is the fifth EX second calver, Bluegrass Jazzman Pams Panama EX95- 3E, now owned with Tregibby Jerseys. In addition to achieving Interbreed Champion at the South West Dairy Show, the first Jersey to do so, Panama is a true milk cow with two yields over 10,000 kg at over 5% fat. Her third 305 day lactation produced a yield of 11,115 kg at 5.78% fat and 3.81% protein, a total of 1,065 kg CFP! So far she has bred three natural daughters, two of which are scored VG including her first, Tregibby Heritage Panama VG87, now in the Strachans’ Rapidbay-UK herd and her last, Tregibby Comerica Panama, who recently scored VG-2yr.

The sixth cow in the list is another to have moved home, with Bluegrass Remake Golden Plait EX95-4E now owned by the Morgans of Erie fame, where she has bred two daughters by Giprat Belles Connection yet to come through the system. Whilst

ABOVE Bluegrass Remake Plait EX95-4E is now a member of the Morgan’s Erie herd. Her family, the Blondie’s, is one of the oldest at Bluegrass.

LEFT Bluegrass Barbers Lady Carol EX95-6E has produced over 65,000 kg lifetime so far and been Royal Show Champion. Her daughter Bluegrass Remake Lady Singsong also scored EX-3yr.
