Structure of the series
The series consists of six strands that focus on the multicultural experience.
Within each strand there are nonfiction Student Books, one Big Book and one Teaching Guide. Each strand promotes the underlying values of the series: • Understanding • Care

Factual text
Nonfiction Student Books • are factual books that focus on guided reading but can also be used for independent reading and research
• utilise a variety of captions, labels, tables and flow charts • use a variety of visual literacy models – photos, maps and diagrams
• include a contents page, glossary and index
Introductory paragraphs form a simple story line that can be read by the less-able reader
Collecting the basil
We all have our own special jobs to do. The youngest family members help Nonno pick basil.
Basil is added to the tomato sauce to give it more taste. Nonno grows all the herbs we need for the Big Red Weekend in his own vegetable garden.

Basil basics
• Basil is a native plant of India where it is used in religious ceremonies.
• Basil was used as a medicine to cure fevers in West Africa and to cure colds in Japan.
• Ancient Greeks saw basil as a symbol of hate, but the Italians have always seen it as a symbol of love.
• Traditionally, an Italian man would wear a sprig of basil when he visited the woman he wanted to marry.
• Basil was also called “Kiss me Nicholas” in Italy.
• Basil is now used as a kitchen herb around the world.
