National Infrastructure Summit: Putting a longer-term perspective on key questions

ANJA KARADEGLIJA – Special to The OCR Construction Report

Mayors from across the country gathered in late January at a national conference to address Canadian infrastructure issues. The National Infrastructure Summit in Regina, Saskatchewan, hosted more than 350 delegates from both the public and pri- vate sector Jan 26 – 28. “It’s timely, absolutely needed, and something that the (Canadian Construction Association) very much supports,” said CCA president Michael Atkinson. The CCA co-sponsored the event, and CCA chair Wayne Morsky was scheduled to make a presentation at the summit. “We think it’s great…the notion and idea behind it is long overdue,” he said. “(There are) participants from all three levels of government, with the notion of

coming up with some kind of coordinated plan that involves . . . government and the private sector to ensure we eliminate the in- frastructure deficit and make sure infra-

structure can provide prosperity, social well- being, and a(n) . . environment to allow Canada’s economy to be competitive in the world marketplace.”

Canada has fallen behind on maintaining its infrastructure. In the 80’s and 90’s, gov- ernments neglected infrastructure and have not been keeping up with necessary invest- ments, Atkinson explained. “There’s no long–term plan about how we’re going to address this, in terms of what should be the priorities, the different mod- els…what should be the role that various levels of government play. All of these are key questions going forward.” A long-term plan would benefit the

country’s construction industry because it would allow the industry to plan ahead, Atkinson said.

“(It would establish) priorities, so that

we know, five years out, what governments will want the industry to be working on.” With an infrastructure plan, the industry
