Americanism/Patriotism Essay Contests Winners

he Groton Lodge of Elks #2163 recently held the Americanism Essay contest sponsored by the Elks Grand
Lodge on a national level for school children in grades 5-8 to express their views on “Why I am Proud to be an American.” The following win- ners from Groton were recognized at a spaghetti dinner on February 9: fi rst place - Jameson Teague, Sacred Heart School; second place – Shenandoah Terry, Sacred Heart School; and third place - Cassidy Mullins, Mary Morrison School. Their essays are being forwarded to the district level for further consideration. Branch 20, Fleet Reserve Association, announced the winners of their 2010-11 Americanism / Patriotism Essay Contest, “What Patriotism Means To Me” for students in grades 7 through 12. Eric DeLea of Niantic, a senior at East
Lyme High School, was selected Branch 20’s First Place winner and will receive a $100 award. The Second Place award of $75 went to Kanani Kinnaman, a home-schooled senior from Mystic, and the Third Place award of $25 was won by John H. Hewitt, a 7th grader at Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Fairfi eld.

The Saint John School, Old Saybrook, Boys JV Basketball Team won the St. Mary’s Basketball Tournament, Branford, on Sunday, January 23. The tournament involved 12 teams in a double elimination format over the course of three weeks. The St. John Eagles defeated St. Mary’s from Milford in the semi-final game and then defeated St. Rita’s from Hamden in the finals. Luke Schoonmaker and Connel Henderson were named to the All-Tournament Team.
