BERLIN MARATHON - BIGGEST TEAM SO FAR
TAKE TO THE SKIES
A record number of runners travelled from all over Germany and the UK to run the Berlin Marathon for The Soldiers’ Charity in September. Braving the pouring rain, over 60 of our runners ran this historic race that finishes just beyond the iconic Brandenburg Gate.
A special shout out goes to the team of six from the Light Aid Detachment who, despite having just returned from Afghanistan, gave up their post-tour leave to take part. Team leader Staff Sergeant Stevie Carroll, based at 16 Signal Regiment based in British Forces Germany told us ”We were in Kabul and the running track there is 0.9 of a mile and I’ve

been doing 20-mile runs round this track so training has been quite boring to say the least!” Being in Afghanistan just reinforces what a good job the charity is doing. It’s a fantastic cause, something I keep coming back to. Yes, it’s a nice weekend but there is a serious message behind it.”
The entire Soldiers’ Charity team were given a warm thank you in Berlin from our Chief Executive, Major General Sir Evelyn Webb-Carter, who reminded everyone what a difference their hard work will make to the lives of soldiers and former soldiers, some of whom have recently served in Afghanistan or Iraq.
What one piece of advice would you give to volunteers raising money for The Soldiers’
Charity? Have fun in helping a vital cause! Don’t be shy! —
Despite the current economic climate, The Soldiers’ Charity is achieving its income
target, why do you think this is? Afghanistan, Afghanistan, Afghanistan – media respect for the Armed Forces – as we draw down in Afghanistan it could wane very quickly. Try collecting for Pakistan Flood Victims today! —
London is the greatest in the UK. Discuss! We have access to a large population who understand our message of a greater need for our soldiers and who have been fantastic in giving money at events such as the Chelsea Flower Show. The support from the Army in London has also proven invaluable! —
If you could pick anyone from history to shake a collection tin for The Soldiers’
Charity who would it be? Winston Churchill, Montgomery, Richard the Third.

Have you got time or a skill you could lend us? Could you put our collection tins in your local pub, the work canteen or your local sports club? Could you be an extra pair of hands at one of our events? If you could help in any way, please contact 01980 672197 or

Last summer we launched our flagship Jump Days at Netheravon Airfield with the Tigers Parachute Display Team from The Princess of Wales’ Royal Regiment. Scores of thrill-seeking supporters took to the skies to raise money for The Soldiers’ Charity in extreme fashion.
MOuNTAIN MEN
Captain David Love and his civilian colleague Martyn Bell undertook the Mont Blanc Challenge last August. Looking to raise £500 for The Soldiers’ Charity, the duo smashed their target, raising more than £750. The lads made it to the summit of Mont Blanc on a fantastic clear lunchtime making for incredible views and stunning photo opportunities.
