February 11, 2011 - 13 Hudson~Litchfield Sports Lady Cougars Nab Two Big Road Wins and a Home Romp

CHS, the Conant faithful fans packed the quaint Conant gym waiting for eventual retribution. The Conant house wasn’t filled with their conventional orange- and black-attired fans or with the Cougar fans that made the trip dressed in their usual supportive red and white. Instead, the bleachers were a sea of pink, as both teams dedicated the game to breast cancer awareness. Through the sale of pink paraphernalia by both teams, over $2,200 was raised to donate to the American Cancer Society. Back on the court, Conant was very

girls’ varsity basketball team had a tough but very successful stretch of three games in five days, including two games in an 18-hour period. With impressive back-to-back road wins at Conant High School on Friday night, February 4, and then at Bow High School the following afternoon, combined with a home trouncing of Winnisquam High, the Lady Cougars vaulted past Conant into first place in the Division III state standings. Friday night’s performance against the host Orioles of Conant was marked by a virtual game-long grueling comeback. With only two minutes and 14 seconds left in the game, junior forward Rebecca Arnone’s hoop put Campbell on top to stay as they held on for a 40-37 victory. Having lost earlier in the season to

effective in the first half as they shut down the Cougar offensive by playing a triangle-and-two defense. The defense was aimed at shutting down CHS scoring threats Liz Pettis and Kristen Hrubowchak. So effective was the gimmick defense; it held Hrubowchak to three points on the night while not allowing Pettis to score at all. As a result, the Cougars, only scoring 14 first-half points, found themselves trailing 20-14 at the intermission. Good coaches make adjustments at halftime, so with a new set of Xs and Os coming out of the locker room, the Cougars no longer relied on the 10- to 12-foot jumpers that saw them go four for 28 from the floor in the first half. “The ball just wasn’t going in,” recalled Head Varsity Coach Shawn Flynn. When Campbell decided to dump the ball into the low post, Arnone and Ally Framarini each had monster second halves as they combined for 17 of the Cougars’ 26 second-half points—all from in the paint. “We pounded the ball into the paint,” added assistant coach Rod Hayward as he attributed that halftime adjusted as the reason for the strong comeback road win. After a few hours of sleep, the Cougar team bus hit the road again, this time with a stop at Bow High School. The Falcons owned an impressive 11-3 record when Campbell

arrived. Coming off a big win the night before, the Cougars built off that momentum and, as Coach Flynn noted, “we used our team speed to build up a 29 to 20 [halftime] lead. We had our legs under us in the first half. Everybody hit a brick wall in the fourth quarter.” The fatigue associated with facing two top-six teams in less than a 24-hour period was taking its toll physically. However, on the scoreboard, the home-team Falcons were unable to cut into the Cougar lead. A fourth-quarter parade to the free-throw line for CHS, led by Marissa Framarini and Liz Pettis, allowed the visiting Cougars to keep the Falcons at bay and escape with a 50-38 win. In the scoring department for Campbell, Pettis rebounded from an off game the night before by pouring in 15 points to lead the team. Hrubowchak came off a sub-par game as well and chipped in with 11 points, while Marissa Framarini

The student showed dedication, commitment, and Black Belt effort all year long! followed closely with 10 points. After two big road wins, Campbell found themselves back in the friendly confines of the ‘Cougar Den.’ With the home game came just what some tired legs needed—a relatively easy opponent. At two wins and 11 losses coming in, the Bears of Winnisquam ‘bearly’ seemed to be any kind of threat. They weren’t, as the Cougars beat up on the visitors by a final score of 74-32. Just five seconds into the game, Hrubowchak took the opening tip and drove in from half-court for an uncontested lay-up, giving the Cougars a lead they would never relinquish. Backed by a sizzling first quarter for both Hrubowchak (seven points) and Arnone (six points), the Cougars raced out to a commanding 24-9 lead after eight minutes of action. A 13 to 4 Cougar run to start the second quarter, highlighted by excellent team interior passing, pushed the CHS lead to 37-13 before ending the first half with a 29 advantage and basically putting the game out of reach. In recapping his team’s successful week, Coach Flynn said, “it shows that hard work pays off—we played two top-notch teams and we didn’t have that hiccup tonight,” with respect to being caught off-guard by a weaker Winnisquam squad. At the JV level, the Cougars split their road games by winning at Conant, 48-29, before falling to the Falcons at Bow, 50-45. “We played some big teams [in the] Bow game; we were in it the whole time,” assessed JV Head Coach Shawn Baskerville. With respect to addressing the 54-35 home loss to the Bears, Baskerville simply added, “Winnisquam was more physical than us.”

With the last three victories under their belt, Campbell’s record improves to 13 wins against a single loss. This Friday night, CHS plays host to Raymond High on Senior Night. The JV game starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m.
