Funeral Advice by Richard C. Dewhirst

Q: With all the snow we’ve been having recently, what challenges have you had with planning funerals and burials? A: What a great question. The recent rash of snow storms and the amount of snow we had had to deal with have certainly made for a challenging winter so far. There are several points to your question to consider. First would be in the planning of a funeral when weather is a consideration. There are already many things to consider when planning a funeral in regards to scheduling and timing. We not only have to consider weather, but weekends, holidays, and special events that we may have to work around. Weather certainly is the most uncertain and variable planning challenge we generally face. Luckily, with the help of modern weather forecasts and technology, we can today, better than ever, look into the future and decide which days and times would be better to schedule services. This year more than ever, we have relied on the weather forecasts to plan services to take place around the worst of the storms we have faced so far. Next would be what happens when a funeral is already planned and the weather that day looks challenging. Even with the best of forecasts, the day of the funeral may be near and the weather may look like it will not be cooperating. As a funeral care professional and under these circumstances, it is my job to work with the family to determine the best course of action. In a case such as this, we have several options. Should we reschedule the services either to another day if the storm looks to be of a long duration? Should we reschedule to a later time on the same day if the storm will be of short duration? Should we just decide to “tough it out” and hold the services in spite of the weather? Certainly, changing the day and/or time causes more disruption than not, but it also allows everyone that needs to be part of the services to attend in safety. It also allows the funeral home staff, cemetery, clergy, etc. to clear away all snow and make the conditions as safe as possible. It may be possible to hold the services despite the storm, but although that would allow events to proceed as planned, there is a real possibility that certain family and friends may be unable to attend in safety. Safety is also an issue, whether considering driving conditions, cemetery conditions, or mobility issues for our elderly relatives and friends. Finally, there would be the discussion of the cemetery. Can the

burial take place and if so, will it be possible under the circumstances of severe weather conditions? This fact alone may make the discussion of whether we can hold a planned service or not a moot point. With modern technology, cemeteries are able to open graves in much more challenging conditions than was possible in the past. With that being the case, it is never a given that a grave may be able to be opened during the winter months or during severe weather conditions. The fact that a grave may or may not be able to be opened does not mean that a service cannot be held. It has been historically common in New England during the winter to hold services and wait until spring to actually perform the burial. This is especially true when we are talking about the burial of cremated remains. A cremation grave is much harder to open in the winter and most cemeteries will not perform these interments once the frost and snow have made the grave that much more difficult to open. This may also apply to a full burial depending on the cemetery location, where in the cemetery the grave is located (on a hill or other difficult area to access), or how much snow, frost, or ground factor (ledge or stone) needs to be navigated. Even if the grave is able to be opened, there may also be a safety factor that would preclude the entire family from attending the burial. Some cemeteries address this by the use of a mausoleum or chapel to hold the services, with the burial being handled by the cemetery staff alone. As you can see, there are many different ways we can go about

navigating the New England weather. As with all services, each is unique and special in its own right and when these situations arise, it is best to sit with your funeral professional to thoroughly discuss and weigh all the options available.
