CONCEALMENT
Most people, if asked, will tell you that one of their most disliked tasks in the home is that of making the bed. Why this 20 second task should be so challenging and disliked is inexplicable, but thankfully a solution is at hand. The Zip Bed by Florida, the Italian manufacturer of furniture systems for living spaces, makes that early morning task that much less daunting due to the perimetrical zip that allows the bed to be closed concealing the pillows, duvet and sheets within.

COVERT KITCHEN
As increasing numbers of people move to the city and property developers look to get more money for their developments, inner city living accommodation has got progressively smaller with ever more studio apartments appearing on the market. In these confi ned living spaces, cooking and sleeping functions are often limited to the same room and it was this phenomenon that prompted Dutch designer Johanneke Procee to re-evaluate the role of furniture in these compact living spaces. Inspired by the slums of South America, where people are forced to
be creative with their living space, Procee came up with KeukenKabinet a kitchen cabinet that doubles as a compact kitchen and a piece of furniture that can be closed away to become part of the living space. The kitchen, made in collaboration with Plugers
& Vercoulen, is made from popular multiplex and has a bamboo countertop and a concrete sink. The door functions as a storage area for provisions and kitchen utensils with leather straps holding everything in place and acting as handles.

SITTING PRETTY
The work of Dutch designer Thomas Linsen of Studio Thol is inspired by the process of evolution and the way in which the natural world is shaped by the forces and the elements. From the cold, heat, altitude, moisture and gravity to wind, sun, rain, snow and drought, all of these factors infl uence how nature is ‘designed’. Linsen approaches his work as if every production were a living
creature subject to these forces and elements and this is evident in his creations. This bathtub for example is made from a chair and the shape that it takes is determined by the water that fi lls the tub when in use.
